I assume this is wrong?

  1. I'm needing to change my alternator and I believe engine out is the way to go?

Anywho, just having a look into the job and I discover the cross beam has been welded to the tin wear! This is wrong I guess?

  2. Normal in a late Bay though in your case it must have broken away from the valence and been welded back on some time in the past.

  3. is that a chassis number there 'punched in' rather than 'embossed out'?

  4. What you've photographed is not part of the tinwear and should be part of the van. In this case, I believe the last rear valance rotted out, and whoever replaced it rewelded this piece in to preserve the chassis number.

  5. Oh I see!

Yeah I wondered what had gone on with the chassis number, it is stamped in.

I'll have another go some time...

  10. Seems like the original vin from that pic

Someones just done a quick and easy repair with the weld rather than fabricating a repair piece after the valance has been replaced

    What trade are you dude?

Im an ex fairy and i tought myself to weld so im sure you can

Buy yourself a mig dude and have a go as it seems you will save a fourtune on your bus down the line

  13. Good advise Rez

Also you may have clearance issue with the accelerator pump lever on the carb when you change to an alternator

You don't need to take the engine out. :)
I should do this really, my dynamo does diddly squat apart from just about put the charging light out... I;ve been driving mine since I got it by charging up on battery charger evey 500 miles or so and never driving at night. All part of the fun.

  15. Yeah as Zed said no need to take the engine out. I just undo the bolts on the fan housing the leaver it up it gives you just enough room to pull it out.

... but don't forget to disconnect the thermostat first.

  17. All good advice cheers guys.

I'm changing it as the voltage regulator has shorted and its an imported alternator with an internal regulator. So I'm changing for a alternator with external regulator for less future fuss.
