Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Vincent Price, Apr 15, 2025.

  1. Hi on average how much is it to get brake pipes replaced flexis are fine but has a advisory on the m.o.t the last few years saying they are corroded any info appreciated

  2. Buy a 25ft length of Knunifer pipe and do them yourself ;)

  3. Getting a garage to do a full replacement will cost a lot in labour.
If you have the ability to do them yourself then it’s far more cost effective to buy the bits and do it yourself

Basically all the brake pipe runs are fairly exposed underneath, so it is a process you can mostly tackle one piece at a time.

However, one thing that goes with rusty pipe is rusted in brake nuts, need to try penetrating oil and sometimes you end up replacing other brake components that get wrecked.. e..g I pulled the thread out of one front brake caliper trying to free the brake line nut.

Also quite often the nut rusts to the brake pipes and you end up twisting the pipe as you undo the nut.

I run my bus up on camping levelling ramps and wedge the wheels to give a bit better access.

Use a decent £35 UK made flaring tool not the box of generic assorted cheese metal tools sold for less..

Use proper cunifer pipe it doesnt corrode so fast.
New brake pipe nuts. Proper brake pipe nut spanners.

To minimise leakage of fluid, top up the reservoir, put a sheet of thin plastic across under the brake fluid filler cap to seal up the vent there.
Once a bit of fluid runs out, it makes a vacuum in the reservoir, air pressure will hold brake fluid in the pipes.
To avoid fluid leaks, I also made up a male and a female brake nut sealing assembly - female has a rubber disc in the bottom of the nut to seal a male tube. And the male nut has a short section of crimped off brake pipe fitted, so you can seal a female connection. It just reduces loss of fluid dripping out over the ground and you.

  7. I'd also suggest flushing the whole system out with new fluid. The original stuff will be black with muck. And changing the rear cylinders, which will be knackered if they're the originals.
