How would no longer being able to drive affect your life?

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by burntout, Oct 27, 2013.

  1. Food for thought - many of us experience life changing things at some point in our life for various reasons - what things do people take for granted too much? And how do you deal with things like this when it happens?

  2. ive thought about this recently , but i think you have to make the most of things while you can , i was in a coma when i was five after being hit by a van , i pulled through luckily , it could have been so different , take every day as it comes ,its tough sometimes , i do know but we are built to survive and our brains are very powerful things , they can shut things down , send signals to numb us ans so much more. Hope your ok Sam n will n the clan o_O pm me.

  3. Used to ride motorcycles and be a Paramedic, smashed my spine, and medically retired, no more bikes and no more career, so drove Land Rovers for a while, now air-cooled VWs, some changes you just have to accept and move on.

  4. Can't imagine what it would be like to permanently lose the ability to drive, but I know it would drive me nuts. I was unbearable earlier this year when I couldn't drive for several weeks after a leg op, am about so have another one this week and therefore will not be able to drive again for a while, aaaaaagggghhhh. :(

  5. hop all goes ok birm , perhaps like me mono cycle is not the future

Would either make travel to my current job impossible, or cost more than I earn! I'd need to move into town so near buses. I was without a car for 1 yr one after an accident and not being able to afford another car til insurance paid up. Luckily I could cycle and train to work so ok for job. The main effect was it kept me more local so saved me cash. However, I did drink more as no longer designated driver!!
I had to plan long journeys more carefully so could book train tkts in advance...... Plus in those days hitching was a viable option, not sure if I would do it now.

It can be a positive thing when such life changes are forced on you by circumstances.
One can sit and mope or get on with it.

  10. It changed mine when it happened, fortunately it wasn't permanent.
I LOVE driving the Bus, even if I'm going nowhere particular.
Having said that @Mrs Top Banana Racing has caught me sitting the bus in the garage making brum brum noises. So I guess I could cope?

  11. Nah! It would send me over the edge. It's lovely knowing you can just go anywhere you want whenever. Even if you don't.

To be true I can't answer this in a true way until it happens but I would like to think I would make the best of what I can still do.

  13. This exact thing happened to my dad - last year he almost died of a brain tumour which left him blind in one eye and partially sited in the other. His vision is not good enough to be able to drive and he had his licence revoked.

It has totally turned his life upside down - along with the other side-effects of the tumour ...

He used to be able to jump in the car and go play golf, go shopping, drive to see people - suddenly all that independence has been taken away.

I wasn't allowed to drive for 2 weeks recently - so I walked or begged a lift - was ok, but then I'm lucky as most things like Supermarket are near. Bigger issue is not being allowed to lift anything heavy, but that's passing

I think the detail point is this, given that most of us drive anyway (this being a forum for vehicles and all), what other impact might the reason one can't drive have as it would need to be big for me to stop (as not driving would massively hamper my career for example).

I.E. not being able to drive, especially something modified, would mean I was seriouly hampered in some physical or mental way - that would have wider ranging impact thant just driving.

  16. That must be horrible for him - and for his family to witness.

  17. That's the word that is so commonly related with being able to drive - independence!

  18. No van no fun...... and no job. Could move out to the village next to work, but thats in the Vale of York, too flat for me. And they spend 6 months of the year underwater, ruddy Swampies.

  19. I wouldn't be able to drive ........
