Formation waterskiing behind a big boat? Strange occupation but nothing surprises me about Scandinavians.
First off im a sarf efrican and what we are doing is called seismic oil exploration. Behind the ship we tow airguns which fire off a signal at about 170bar,this signal then travels through the water into the earths crust to a max depth of about 60km,when the signal bounces back it is recorded onto streamers (12 of them)which are long cables towed behind the ship, inside are hydraphones which send the signal back onboard. The signal or data is then processed to make a 3d image of the earths crust.Geologists then advise the oil companies where to drill and which direction to drill. I am a shift leader in the gun department,we are commonly known as "Gunners". We work onboard for 5 weeks then have 5 weeks free. This pic i think was taken in Indonesia as we were flying in on a chopper.Pic was not taken by me.
I think formation waterskiing was a better occupation but only just. Feckin' interesting though, I've just spent a while googling it.
Cheers for giving us the info on what you do, it looks like its a very interesting job! Out of interest, have the scanners picked up wreckages of ships or aircraft?
Great pic , job sounds great too , i missed my chance to navigate and eventually skip oil tankers for BP but you turn one corner n so on ........ Keep um coming
We dont scan the surface of the seabed,we scan under it! It can be a tough job sometimes, very hot! Difficult being away from my family but when im home im home for 5 weeks! Its not for everybody but i wouldnt swap what i have! Its a good lifestyle. Blah blah blah enough about me,we should be chatting vw vans!!!!
whats amazing about your pic is theirs no another boat bird nowt on that sea behind your vessel . I luv it.
Nah, forget dubs for a few minutes. How do the signals affect marine life, especially those that communicate through water such as whales & dolphins?
Well they do effect marine mammals that is why we have observers onboard who will shut us down if they spot or hear a a dolphin etc.. We tow equipment too which is tuned into listening for marine mammals
