How safe is paypal??

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Rixy, May 29, 2012.

  1. how do :) i have a private plate for sale currently, and i have had some interest expressed from a chap fro the uk but who is currently working offshore in texas u.s?

he has offered me full asking price, and wants to pay for it asap, this sounds a little dodgy to me, and i just wondered how safe paypal is?

if he sends me the cash, is that it? job done, or could something go wrong and i get the cash removed from my account or whatever after i've sent the paperwork off??

what can i do to make sure it is legitimate, he may well be a nice honest chap? i just dont wanna get caught out?

    any thoughts??

If he makes a claim that the plate never arrived it could get sticky so if of any value send items recorded or if of high value have them signed for by recipient.

Is there any way you can find out his ebay username (I know you are not mentioning ebay) and see what feedback you can gauge from there?

  4. oh it'll deffo be going recorded delivery signed for and what not, was more worried about paypal, if he paid from an offshore account that then got pulled or something, i dunno?? perhaps im being over worried???

  5. i've never had trouble with paypal - once the money arrives you can see it in your paypal account and transfer it. however, without evidence of posting, the buyer can claim their money back via paypal. therefore i would insist on some form of courier such as dhl or ups for overseas at the buyers costs.

We once won and paid for an item from the the land of the free never to receive the item. We only got half are money back but thats the other way round so not sure to be true.

Things to check are is there good feedback and plenty of it this shows if you can have a bit of trust in them.

If he's a UK person that is only texas as for a current contract of work why would he have a US paypal account and not use his UK one

im guessing he wont want the paperwork going abroad, as its a uk plate, and its no use to him there??

i'll see what he says, i've asked him for uk address, and his name etc - will wait for a response.....

I suppose it could be he gets a better rate when buying in dollars (just a guess)

  10. Do a bank transfer. PayPal isn't brilliant. Money can be claimed back. With a Bank transfer, there is no way of getting the money back :)

  11. When I have bought a high value item on ebay I have noticed sellers sometimes have a policy of waiting for 3-4 days before sending the goods. I dont know if this is clearance time or what, maybe do the same, if the money has not been retracted in that time send the goods, and only to the registered address, then you can be sure that a compromised paypal account is not being used, finally you need proof of delivery. If its a private plate there will be some sort of paper trail with DVLA so it can be proved if a dispute arises.

he can't use the plate in america anyway so why would you send the retention certificate there? seems fishy to me, but anyway if you insist on selling to him why not call his bluff and tell him to trust you as much as you trust him.....ask him for half up front and the balance once you have checked his money transfer isn't dodgy? why insist on paypal? tell him to pay direct into your bank via sort code/account number, it's safe and he can't get it back then.

Had a few probs with PayPal, at moment someone has setup a new bank account in my settings but strangely the bank account is in my name. PayPal are being very unhelpful.
I really hate PayPal as they are part of ebay

  14. Chuffin PayPal! Royal mail are no better either!

Mrs Robo sold some faulty GHD's to someone a few weeks back, we sent them 1st class recorded but they have not arrived, buyer has opened a case and PayPal has nicked the money back until it's resolved!

So I've now got to claim from the post office for the lost item, what a mess around it annoys me cos if I refund the buyer & then the item arrives before I get a refund from royal mail I will have lost out big time but until the matter is resolved PayPal are holding onto the money...

  16. even when money goes into paypal it my take a few days to clear. paypal will tell you when it has. don't send anything until you receive this notice.

  19. Ive used them since the inception of ebay/paypal. Ive never had any issues. I link it to my credit card for double insurance. Make a really hard password. Really hard and never let your pc save it.
