i thought that tbh -- i kind of think there's no flap in there from what silver says :)

    Silver Needs points/will pay!

  3. Have you got a Y piece at the back?? cant see. That quite big flex at back where you normally have two smaller black plastic ones might be slowing flow down a bit too maybe?? As a bye the bye that is.

Do you mean where it goes into the main pipe Barn ?

i think it was missing when i got the van !

  7. hows your heat now .and what didyou use where the the heat pipe reduces to 75 mm near the front .as that flexi trunk stuff is 100mm poptop2

Heating is fine now jd, i reduced the biger pipe by snipping it and squeezing it into the smaller pipe andtaped it to seal it!

  9. just took my under belly trays off to get them powder coated. Insulating my heater pipe is my next job. Under £20, makes a change :)

  10. Nice one I did exactly the same. Survived 2 salty winters so far! Nice one

  11. so ive done the larger pipe and there is a slight increase in heat output , but nothing to get hot under the collar about , so the front section is next , i know there is heat being produced as one of flexi trunk liners melted in the heat after the garage removed the trunking to get to the fuel pump and when they replaced it they managed to block it up with the insulation

  12. Ive just stripped down the tubes that connect the heat exchangers to the rear y piece
Im going to remove the cloth insulating wadding clean up and paint the mesh supports with high temp paint then wrap the wadding back round then try and wrap some of that bubble insulation round before installing it all back inside the tube

I have repro heat exchangers with less fins than the og ones so im going for as much insulation as possible to aid the cause

I have no insulation whatsoever around any of my pipes, but it's toasty warm from the OG heat exchangers.

I rather think all the insulation is clutching at straws if there is barely any heat to begin with.

og exchangers for the win. The beetle had them too and even with just one switched on you had to open the window or turn it down a bit.

  14. I agree steve og heat exchangers are the best way forward as they give the most heat to begin with

However i dont have a pair and cant afford a pair
Im having to refurb the repros that were allready fitted to my bus because i cant even afford new repros lol

As always when on a budget you can only try and make the best of what you have

If i could afford it id be importing a set of those repros that are exact copys of the og ones fromt the states

I bet you'd find a pair cheap as chips in the states (if we lived there). It's hard for us here in the UK to believe how a part of the exhaust system can last for 40 years - must be the salt here that leads us to expect them to rust to dust every few years. Got to be importers who have these things, or get a US forum member to get a pair for you and post over?

For those of us unfortunate enough to have replacement heat exchangers insulating seems to keep some of the warmth going until it gets from the blunt end to the sharp end , makes sense to me cos its a cheap fix . tbh it's just as warm as my og heat exchangers on my other vans .

I still have the insulating jackets I took off the main pipe and Y-piece, I couldn't bring myself to put them back, particularly the Y-piece as I thought they make such a great water trap. The one down the centre I replaced with a pukka later corrugated plastic one that I assumed was insulated, though I didn't look too hard! Reading this thread maybe I should insulate it all again and see if I can get to t-shirt weather in the van. :)

I wonder it the company that makes the heat exchangers is aware they could sell for 2 or 3 times the price with better fins? Perhaps, judging by the ulra-poor casting on the repro's the company is just not up to it.

I saw some og T4 exchangers for sale last year at Stanford Hall, that were still there at the end and only about £70 each. No rust but nobody interested for some reason. I should have bought them looking back. Not for me, but seems someone would have snapped them up on here!

  18. Ive still got the insulating jackets i removed of my y piece and the piece in the front crossmember aswell
Your correct that they make great water traps steve mine were sodden when i removed them
Ive only kept them to use as templates to make jackets from somthing more modern and non absorbant
I have the corrugated cardboard main pipe to go back on which is in brilliant condition because it got covered in ziebart or whatever was used underneath the bus all those years ago
It had no insulation fitted though but i will be wrapping it in the silver bubble wrap stuff aswell

I think people dont look out for pukka heat exchangers at shows because everyone assumes the stock system is rubbish as thats the talk thats done the rounds for years

Ill get my hands on a pair at some point down the line but will still insulate all the pipes as id rather have more heat than i need on tap than just not enough

Ive mentioned it many times before and i will say it again

The stock heating system when properly sealed and in good working condition is actually very good
What people fail to remember is german winters are a lot colder and harsher than ours

  19. Where did I see the picture showing the cut away sections of old and new heat exchangers

  20. I think it was snotty who posted it in one or two threads
I dug one of the threads out a week or so ago
