How easy should it be to close my sliding door?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Fronkjunior, May 28, 2013.

  1. Hi all, my sliding door is not so easy to close. I need to slam it and am concerned it will wake up the entire campsite when I have to visit the loo at night. I had new rollers fitted, so I am hoping lubrication may help. Any ideas on what to use and where? Any other tips appreciated also.

    Fronk.

mine slides so easy and quiet, i cleaned every bit of grease and dirt from the rollers and track and sprayed with chain lubricant and it's fine - top tip i was shown was shut door slowly to the catch then push the rear of the door with the palm of your hand where the pop out hinge is and push firmly to shut it, from inside fit a westy handle at the rear to pull it in from the inside.

  3. I'd doubt whether lubrication will help your need to go to the loo :)

  4. ha ha. this a good one, same as Ricky from outside I slide and push on the rear of the door....closing from inside wake everybody up. Lol.

  5. So a bit of lube and a firm hand is best for a satisfactory result!

Were the tracks you cleaned those at the top and bottom of the sliding door opening Ricky? No grease at all in there, just oil?

the top and bottom track - especially the bottom one, plus the one behind the panel cover under the window - no grease at all, grease collects dust and dirt - silicone based chain lube works for me.

  7. I've never known a silent sliding door yet, but yeah it is quieter when lubricated. I'll try that technique though if the situation arises. A Pee bucket may actually be easier though ;)

The later ones are much better/less slamming. Mine's a beast, the bottom track is a bit gnarled.

  11. I've an interest in this thread, I have to slam my door with force to close the blighter. My bottom track is seriously full of black sludge that was once probably grease. I'll give rooos tip a go. :)

Lime79 has the best sliding door I've come across so far. It's silky smooth.

My Barry's isn't too bad but I need to clean out lube the runners.

  13. Slide gently till pre slam then bump door end with Glutus Maximus >works for me !

  14. Like rickyrooo1 said clean all grease and oil off and use a silicone based lube on it. Mine wouldn't even close but after a proper clean of all tracks and rollers it closes with a light touch and don't forget the locks as these being stiff can maen a slam is necessary even though the door moves easily.

  15. I made one of these for my westy to help closing the door as the inside handle is down the side of the coolbox/fridge unit on a westy.

Saves you having to slam it, as you can use the strap to pull it shut.

I like a nice big sliding door slam in the small wee hours. It lets the caravan owners know they are in the presence of a classic campervan. :D
