How easy is it to take a devon poptop off

  1. Ive just made a new vinyl lined hardboard liner for my devon poptop after the old one fell off, burnt down and sunk into the swamp. Now its made and i offered it up prior to the vinyl to make sure it fits, i want to make sure it stays up. I'm guessing a liberal amount of no more nails or similar will do it but I think if i took just the GRP roof bit off and stuck it down, it might be easier. So basically I am after some tips from people who have done this. BTW I made it in one piece. Answers on a postcard please or alternatively post your thoughts here.

The vinyl is some white foam backed roof liner from http://www.fabricuk.com/ in case anyone wants to find some themselves. Cheap and quick delivery.

    Ta.

  2. depends what type of Devon it is.

Mine is the flat type with the base fixed to the roof, but there are the one piece type ....if that make sense.

For mine, you had to remove the fixing strip which holds the bottom of the bellows/canvas to the roof, then undo the bottom mounting screws which hold the spring loaded arms to the roof of the bus (be careful they are under a lot of tension and it will hurt if they fly open!!)

the roof can then be removed from the bus.

alternativly you could undo the fixings from the pop top its self and the bellows and just remove the top bit

I'm not sure with regards to the other type

  3. Do you really need to take the top off? I've got the later Devon roof, where the hardboard lining's attached to wooden battens with screws. I put some more battens in to support new vents at the back, but...I wouldn't trust No More Nails or other kind of PVA stuff - the panel fell down again. I'd use epoxy to stick the battens on.
