How do I wire in a lights on alarm buzzer?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Fronkjunior, Apr 2, 2013.

  1. I have seen little 12 volt buzzers in Maplins and am looking to wire one in to alert me when I leave the lights on and then open the door. The idea is to stop me draining the battery by mistake. Hoe do I wire this in? Is it a case of one side going to the positive of the lights and the other to the negative of the door switch?

    Any guidance appreciated. Thanks.

    Fronk.

  2. Hi Fronk,
Yes that would work. Connect the 12v lead on the buzzer to one of the light feeds, then connect one side of the switch to the buzzer earth and the other side of the switch to vehicle earth. Just make sure the switch breaks when the door is closed and not the other way round!

  3. I may be wrong, but didn't late US spec Westfalias have this as standard? If so I'd like to get mine reinstated...

  4. I was wrong. Looking on Ratwell it was a door buzzer I was thinking of. They can however, be modded to buzz if the lights are left on. Hmmmmnnn.

It was a key in the ignition warning buzzer. But you are right. You can wire it up to the lights or anything for that matter.

  6. I recall an advert for a very expensive NEW vehicle boasting it had an "lights on alarm system". Strewth, it's just a 99p buzzer and a few minutes to fit as above

Use a 5pin relay and the lights and ignition feed
    Relay type 3 http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/VWP-onlinestore/relays/relays.php

    Connect side light to buzzer,
connect buzzer to relay 30 Com
    87a NC to ground
That will make it buzz with lights on.
Connect ignition switch output to 85 relay coil, then other side of relay coil to ground.

That will switch the relay to break ground and kill the buzzer when ignition is on.

  8. Dead right Birdy, mine has it and it's a right royal pain in the arse! Buzzing away whilst I'm trying to work on the electrical system. I intend to find it at some point and consign it to the bin!

  9. Once the novelty's worn off, you'll find your buzzer Very Annoying...

  10. Its in the fuse box. Look a bit like a relay but only has two connections

I'm with you on that. I hate cars that do this. That said the ragtop has it for the lights and its been useful however the 500 beebs and buzzes at anything and everything. I've never worked out why it beeps when I'm putting it in park. One day I'll reach under the dash and pull the little bugger out.

  13. If it's heading for the bin TBP I'll gladly give it a good home...

  16. That's funny, Penny's 500 doesn't beep or buzz apart from the lights warning (oh, and it gets very annoyed if you don't put your seatbelt on ;) ). Is this another example of an automatic version that's been designed for stupid Americans who can't tie their own shoelaces?

  17. I assume it was put in because of US regs, like the half-lit hazard switch.

  18. Has it got rear parking sensors and it beeps as you put it through reverse into park?

No. It's only a small 500. How hard can it be to swing it around in a carpark??

  20. My ms' Fiat 500 has a novel anti-theft device - the door handles come off when you try to open them. Saying that shut the doors too firmly and the windows fall out. So that's a risk. I'd say it was the worst car in the world but I don't want to think about it too much.

It failed it's test twice last week. The first on the back window light. Not something simple like a bulb - a half wiring loom as the act of opening and shutting the boot crimps the wires until they get exposed and break. Great design. £700+ fitted.

I would advise anyone to get rid of their 500 before it starts getting expensive like ours. Just done 40000 in 5 years and it's falling to pieces.
