  1. Hi All
i can not get my revs to drop to idle speed on my type 4 motor i have even swapped out the carbs for a spare set i have, same problem i have disconnected the cable thinking it might be sticking no change has anyone got any suggestions on what the problem might be,the idle screw on the carb makes no difference at all

    Check the timing.

Points closing up, loose distributor, advance sticking will all effect idle revs. Advance sticking will keep the revs high. Do you ever oil the bit of felt under the rotor?

  7. its reving so high its hard to check the timing

What you could do is start it, set the timing back to 7.5 which should slow it down, then see how far it advances to by increasing the revs with the throttle. If the answer is "not a lot" you'd know the advance is stuck.
You might (probably will in my experience) find that once you reduce the revs with the timing, the advance manages to return to zero and you have to increase it again to 7.5. If that happens, blip the throttle to increase the advance and see if it settles back or gets stuck again. You'll find something out at least.
It's probably too late to cure with some oil, you might have to take it to bits and clean it up properly.

All the above assuming that this is your problem of course.
