Hi Newbie

  1. Hi All just a quick intro, I dont own a late bay, but have an early, and a squareback, the reason Iam posting here is Iam in need of info.. hope you all dont mind, I run a small business building engines and general maintenance work, so far they've all been early bays and beetles, but the late bays are appearing.
The question I have regards the engine bay seal, where can I get genuine rubber seals, I know the aftermarket foam ones are available, but these items are NOT fit for use, Ive seen quite a few cooked engines as a result of these things getting sucked into the fan.
So hopefully someone here will know, looking forward to your answers

    Regards

    Roger

if fitted properly the "foam" ones are fine shiny side (coated) down and foam in the engine bay - join to the rear, no idea how you think they come out? just kampers made some solid rubber ones at one time they were awful the profile on the corners was wrong, I've got a foam one in now and it's been ok for 2 years, got it from heritage.

    Welcome aboard Roger!

The engine bay seals are as Rick says - our westy one is absolutely fine, its foam too & has been on the bus for 3+ years with no issues!

  5. Hi Again thanks for the reply, iam looking for genuine rubbers not repro, I know people use these foam seals.. but I wont be one of them, so does anybody have one I can look at ? I would consider having a batch made .

  7. Thanks for the rtn messages, Like I say Iam adamant about NOT using foam seals, If foam were ok VW would have used them instead of going the costly route of having rubbers specially made, so any info as to where, who, who much, all help in any form gratefully received.. thanks guys

    have you tried ringing
    cool air
    vw heritage
    just kampers
    custom and commercial
    etc etc?
i'm not sure on a supplier for full rubber ones - as I say the rubber one I got from jk in 2011 was horrid but they did sell them

  9. Hi Again, It would seem that the foam seal was std on late bays ?, sorry for this Iam used to dealing with EBs where they are rubber, can anyone shine light on this ?

  10. T
Thats correct earlys had a rubber seal as standard and late had the foam seal as standard

Have you tried comparing lengths between rubber and foam, to see what the actual differences are?

Another thought, have you got a good example of a genuine rubber one & taken it to a rubber extruders to see if they can match the profile.

    OOOh - Interesting.
    sorry to thread-jack but.............

I approached my van from the rear the other day (oo-er missus) and one of the foam bits was hanging down and nearly touching the floor.
I have 72 made, 73 reg crossover. anyone know whether it should have foam or rubber?

    thanks

  14. Hi guys,

It would seem that foam was the std fitment on 72 onwards, I myself am still not comfortable in its use, however you can only work with what youve got, so I will over the next month or so look into designing S/S clips that fit to the tinware and prevent the foam from being sucked into the fan.. this sound ok to you guys ?
