Help, We have lost our keys (and our spare keys)

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by the crumpets, Aug 24, 2011.

  1. We have lost both sets of our keys.

We have searched everywhere for the past two weeks, we are gutted as this is my week off for our summer holidays.

I have had a look on JK and they do a complete lock set, but that is more than i want to spend. trying to go through my options.

I can get into the van but not lock it now.

    1. how can i get a new lock cut, is it as simple as getting the serial number from the back of the ignition barrel and the back of the door locks?

    2. How do i take the ignition lock barrel out to replace it if i go down the buying the whole lock system.

Any help (serious help) is appreciated

It should be covered by your insurance -- go for a new lock set all round if they cover you ;)

  3. Unfortunately its not covered by the insurance, that was my first port of call after i had put the whole of the house contents back in the house from the garden

any locksmith will beable to cut a key for any lock by "feeling" the barrel, the thing is they also realise the cost and desperation of replacing the locks.......ring one for a quote and base this against the cost of relocking and doing the work yourself. of course sods law dictates you will find the keys 2 minutes after he has left/you have done the lock.

  6. Most locksmiths carry a special skeleton key devise to "feel" the grooves of any lock, this allows them to recut a new key, there are even mobile ones, I visited one in Malvern that cuts Renault keys that Renault claim its not possible to recut, so an crappy old VW lock is surely no problem, just call around the local locksmiths

Must admit i was thinking of this murphys law and biting the bullet knowing that they will turn up just after i have replaced the lock.

The locksmith quotes are basically the same as me buying the complete lock set, but they will only do two keys for the ignition and the door locks whereas if i do it myself then i have a new set

  8. We had a new ignition barrel fitted by the garage - after asking around on here and being advised it was a pain in the neck - it wasn't cheap :(

Have you turned your van inside out looking for the spares? We often hide our spares & then spend ages trying to remember where...

If you can lock from the inside you only really need one door, ignition & boot to make the van secure - might save a bit? It took us ages to get the locks sorted on ours

There was an article in last months Practical Classics magazine on making keys if you can get the lock barrel out..

  11. www.robinsonstraditionalcobblers.com. That me. I can cut keys to code norm about two days turnaround , key no on inside of door lock or side of ign barrell , make keys up from locks or sweet them ( one key fits all locks )

  12. Still having dramas.

1st off the barrel numbers on the doors and tail gate do not correspond to the actual key they are meant for, luckily the passenger door fitted the key so was able to change all the barrels to fit this key, unfortunately the ignition barrel doesn't fit this key. Confusing thing is that with my other set of keys they fitted all of the doors and the ignition barrel.

    Now (help time please),

Can any one tell me how to remove the ignition barrel. I have stripped it all down as you can see in the pictures, i was expecting to see some sort of locking nut but there is none to be seen, just a blanking plate.

At wits end at the moment as this has been going on for a while now, we missed RTTH and now missed Vanfest,

steering column and wheel stripped down

picture of blanking plate or something but definately not a locking nut

    another picture for good measure

what year is your van? karmann konnection will do a key through the post for about £15 from the lock number on the ignition barrel, which if it fitted all the locks would have solved the isssue, looking at your ignition barrel if you buy a new one from jk, german and swedish etc again around £15, though the key style is different so you wont be able to match it to your doors or vica versa. i think you need to drill this one out in a certain place. will have a look if i have it in a manual

  15. Well that saga is over.

I now have one key that fits all doors, tail gate and engine bay. So thanks alot to chrisradioman for his thread on re-keying.

I now have a van that starts, thanks to davidoft for his info on how to drill the barrel out. Thought it was going to be alot harder than it was.

Thanks to everyone who gave there advice and offered there help.

Now i have that cracked my next mission is to turn back time and go to RTTH and vanfest. Once i have turned back time i may even write a song about 'if i could turn back time' but i don't actually think there is much mileage in a title like that
