Help Removing Instrument cluster!

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by davedub, Jul 19, 2012.

  1. Hi all. Just a quick ask on how do i remove the instrument cluster (fuel Guage showing full) I have taken out the 4 retaining screws and disconnected the speedo cable but the heating/Vent bars are stopping it from coming away from the dash.

I have taken off the 4 yes 4 rubber covers but cannot get the cluster to come away for me. are these rods screwed in somewhere as i can pull them forward about a cm but no more after this. very frustrating and i know it is a loose wire as when i toggle the cables the guage used to show how much was in the tank but is now stuck on full tank once ignition is on...... arrrgh

there are some plastic, clips that run through the back of the sliders holding them in, you need to get them off and they are hard to get off, you may need to either take the dash top off or the whole dash out to get to to them

Take the glove box out for a good view. Someone suggested a small socket to push them out, which should squeeze and push at the same time. Sounds a good idea?

i think they have little pins in the middle, 3mm maybe that you have to push out to release the bigger plastic clip, but they are difficult to get out.

The first bus I had had these plastic bits and they infuriated me so much I smashed them out. Didn't miss them - not sure what the point of them is. lol Just saying maybe don't put them back. :)

  12. 2 LEDS?
You can just reach under to fit these,
All good practice though, I did exactly the same
    Al

I haven't got battery connected and only fitted 2 so far. 1 bottom of speedo and one top between speedo and fuel displays. i think there might be one to do in the main beam one (is this the 3rd one to change??) but wanted to leave that till battery wired up and dark. Don't won't it too bright..!!? :))

Didn't know what was what behind there so took the route of taking out cluster. It will also make wiring in my fog and spots into the dash easier too now it's out. To be honest once i used the socket trick it didn't take long at all to take out. :)

  13. What LED's did you use. i have replaced with 1.2w bulbs not very bright but at least i can now see the speedo in the dark.

Please post the LED link if you have one. might invest in a couple of these as the bulbs do work but are not very bright.

  15. I have just requested 3 bulbs but i need 2 but will keep one as a spare. will also run new wires from switch in behind the dash as this should only take five mins.

have asked for 3 but not sure if there are any left but if there are i will order them today hopefully.

  16. I got 4 cos i'm using the 3rd to go behind the high beam, so i can see if it's on or off & a spare..!! Will hopefully get time next week to work on van and see them working properly..!! :)

They were easy to fit but i think you need them the right way so if they don't light up 1st time, take out and spin 180 degrees (Bulb not yourself!!!) LoL :))
