Help! Ht leads

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by HamishBay, Jun 23, 2023.

  1. Hi. Total novice here but I'm currently on the West Coast of Scotland in my 77 bay type 4 with fuel injection and one of my ht leads has cracked resulting in misfire and lack of power. I can get a pair of leads tomorrow but unsure if they are the correct ones is there anyway of knowing or am I being towed home :(

Did you put your registration number in and was that the result? If so order those, fit and carry on!

Alternatively, you can run insulation tape along the whole lead , swap one over to be sure it’s definitely the lead

  5. It's a 4 hour bus journey to get there and back with the lead as the vans pretty undrivable now. I did a reg search and because its an import it won't give the van spec so I just had to manually search, might be worth a try then

It will be interesting and give you something to do I suppose. Have a try at what David suggests above before you go though, and make sure all the leads are pushed on fully!

  7. This is what I'm dealing with. What's more annoying is somebody must have known about it because gaffer tape had been put over the crack and the lead placed back over the plug! 20230623_191514.jpg

  8. Does it actually click onto the plug ok?

  9. I had the local recovery guy out and he said it doesnt seem to click into place rather just hover over the plug loosely and the gaffer tape was stopping the spark arcing onto the block but the tape had started to melt

I would tape that up, , if it clicks onto the plug it will be fine , but check it’s not cracked higher up

You can see it in there I think.

What Davidoft is saying is there’s a screw on piece for on top of the actual plug that looks as if it’s still in the HT lead. Pull it out screw it back onto the plug and refit the lead.

  14. Argh right thanks I get you now, I have managed to limp to a campsite but good Scottish weather means its absolutely passing it down now so I'll check in the morning hopefully that works!

See if theres another permutation of leads that means if you chopped off the bad lead at the break and screwed it into the cap, all four leads would stretch to the correct spark plug.

Even a bit of garden hose pipe or some other tubing over the offending lead might buy you time ... if you can unscrew the cap from the ignition lead, you can thread it inside a pipe. (Some caps just screw onto the end of the ignition lead.)

Araldite also works quite well to glue up cracks in HT insulation. Fill the damage with the glue then tape over it.

If the spark has to track more than an inch round the end of a bit of pipe it might not arc out of the lead.

Especially if as others say you get the spark plug screw on tip out of the cap and screwed back onto the spark plug.. then the spark wont have to jump any extra distance along the lead to make it into the cylinder where you want it.

When you do buy a new set of leads, if the longest lead from the old set is any good keep it as a spare in the bus..
