help engine will start but will not idle

Hi we have just taken delivery of our new late bay, it has a refurbed 1.6 beetle engine, she fires up but i cant get her to idle, can any give me any clues to whats wrong, i have been in touch with the guy i bought it off and i get the usual it was running sweet before and its too far to take it back to him to look at, thanks. bracklough

 

Will she run when the revs are held above idle speed?
If so it could be a blocked idle jet in the carb.

Does it just die when when at idle?

 

Check the wire hasn't fallen of the shut of valve (cylinder screwed into LHS of carb), or the choke (RHS of carb).
If not, check the other end hasn't fallen off the coil +ve.
If that's ok, unscrew the idle jet (under the choke) and blow it through with carb cleaner (or a gas-lighter refill).
If it idles when it's cold, it'll be a blockage in the idle circuit (idle jet first as it's easy, then dismantle and blow through the idle circuit holes).

 

Thanks fro the replys, have checked the connections all ok been for some carb cleaner will try the idle jet today, hope that works. bracklough.

 

Check the fuel filter too while you're at it.

 

and don't forget the obvious one - the idle screw adustment.
