HELP! :( EFI type 4 engine starts, then stalls.

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by alez, Dec 10, 2021.

  1. Hi, All.

My engine is refusing to run and I'd appreciate any comments of similar troubles you may have experienced.

I'm based in Spain but my van is from California. It has a type 4 engine with stock engine management which is EFI and electronic ignition. This setup is rare in Spain, which is bad because repair garages don't have experience with it.

    The behaviour experienced is:

-The starter motor starts a cold engine okay, no throttle required (normal with EFI).
-The idle speed is correct for a cold-ish engine (i.e. increased RPM).
-The slightest amount of throttle will bring the RPM down abruptly, making the engine stop.
-As the engine starts to warm up a little, RPM decreases slowly, and the engine ends up stalling anyway.

I have recorded a little video clip of a cold start:

Note: PASSWORD FOR VIEWING IS "1234".

If you turn the volume up, you will be able to hear how the engine reacts to my attempts to give it a slight gas.

Also the start is a marginal success (it is unreliable) whereas before it started perfectly well first time just like a modern day car even with a hot engine.

Has any of you experienced something like this?

Thank you very much and I hope my English is not too bad.

    Cheers,

    Alex

Check all of your vacuum hoses on the FI system as they have an impact on how it runs, any degradation and it suffers poor running.

there are six in total to check and replace.

First step is to run through all the diagnostics for the FI as detailed in Bentley.
They are sequenced in order to progressively eliminate the good bits from the bad.
    Where in Spain are you?

  6. Thanks very much for your response.

What is "Bentley"? If it's recommended literature, I'm more than happy to buy a copy. I don't currently have much of that, just a Haynes manual.

    I'm in Madrid :)

You’re welcome Alez, when our westy ran erratically like you describe it was always one of those hoses perished.

@Chrisd also has the FI booklet for the Bosch injection which he may be able to get scanned?

@alez I am trying to scan the documents, but unfortunately we have just bought a new scanner as the old one was partially broken and the old one does not want to work. So I will scan the book as soon as I have set up the new scanner this weekend ..sorry for the delay.

  16. Guys, I have no words to say how much I appreciate your help. Wow.

Silly me, I had missed this very first response which is the starting point:

Anyway, I have downloaded all the files. I'll print all the relevant stuff and we'll take it from there.

    Massive thanks.

Alez - as others have said, the best thing to do is look for the fault systematically using the manuals. But I’d put a little bet on it being a faulty Cylinder Head Temperature sensor - any takers? I had the same symptom on my D-Jet; high resistance on the sensor leans out the mixture to the point where it just idles but won’t rev or pull. New sensor is about £25. Good luck!
