Poor Sharon and Sarah have broken down at Strensham Services southbound on their way to Cornwall for their holidays! Is anyone nearby who could lend a hand? Sarah thinks it may be the starter motor. Luu is a 1600, 1975
what symptoms make them belive starter motor? clicking and no engaging? if so tap starter with hammer or rock forwards/backwards while in gear. winding over and no starting? if they have been driving a while and it is hot but not starting and they haven't fitted a hot start relay tell them to give it half hour and it will start.
Devil it , i'm going to Glasgow tonight otherwise i have been going that way all week -- tell em to rock it back n forth in 2nd gear then try starting it again .
Is battery turning it over ?? If not its likely to be what rick says ,hot start problem, thats when it would happen at petrol station when been running for a while. Just let it cool down n then see. Also check wire onto solenoid is tight ,thats up next to starter motor smaller can shape thing.
I live about 15 miles away. I know absolutely nothing about mechanics so I would be of absolutely no help. But if they wanted a tow to a local garage (I hope they've got tow rope because I haven't) then send me a PM (I'll be around till 7pm).
Nice aa man sorted carbs, only for something to in wrong further down the road. To say they're not happy is an understatement.
Hello guys, thanks for all the support - we finally arrived at the campsite this afternoon The first breakdown turned out to be a dodgy wire/connector for the main ignition and possibly a dodgy ignition switch (initially before he fixed the wire it was only reading 9v afterwards it was reading 11v) When she finally fired up she sounded her usual and straight away he said it was all wrong and very retarded - so much for the mechanics comment of "they are perfect". Anyway it turns out he has been into VW's for years so he had a quick fiddle and pointed out all the bits the mechanic had done wrong. He had a quick play, adjusting the timing and mix and then got me to test drive - wow she was amazing no popping or backfiring and drove like a dream. The second breakdown (at the side of the M5 ) - I suddenly lost power it turned out the linkage bar had come off, I dont blame the AA guy he had pointed out that they didnt seem to be fixed properly. Anyway an hour and a half later someone turned up and put it back on. Thing is its now too tight and running badly again so we'll have to get them set up properly whilst we're here - I can't wait to drive her the way she should be with twin carbs I can't help wondering if I should send the bill to the mechanic!?!?
Dont use that mechanic ever again girls Thats all basic stuff for an aircooled mechanic and hes obviously not a clue You will love driving it with twin carbs once its all set up correctly especially if you have a rolling road session with someone who knows there aircooled dubs
Glad it's getting sorted. With these current antics I think there should be a rolling resto award and I'd vote for you two. I've also edited my first post. I didn't mean to put the smiley face. Good luck with the rest of your jolly
