help - can;t get trailing arms out of front beam!

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by grub, Apr 28, 2015.

  1. Hi all,

My front suspension is rock solid as the trailing arms are siezed in the front beam tubes.

I managed to get the bottom pair off & have greased them up and they are all ok now but I can;t get the top ones out.

I have adjusters & I've taken the grub screw out of the centre of the beam and slid the leaves out about a foot.

The trailing arms will move with a pounding from a lump hammer and a block of wood, but you can't get any purchase to actually pull them out.

I've tried a bearing puller, but you can't really get a grip with the arms as the back edge of the trailing arms have a chamfer on them & the arms keep slipping off.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

  5. Thanks for the replies guys

    Hammer time? You're not wrong!

Got them out eventually after a LOT of banging with a large lump hammer & a few choice words.

Tried everything - trolley jack wedged between the beam & the trailing arm, long bar bolted to the trailing arm - ended up bashing hell out of the leaves from the other end but. man, did it take some shifting (& many hours).

Anyways, now got them off - one of the outer (look like polyurethane) bushes has a bit broken off & looks like it's gone hard so will probably replace that one & maybe the others if that goes well.

i assume I can just cut the old bushes out with a hacksaw then knock the new ones in with a rubber mallet?

    thanks
