Hello! In search of a dormobile interior

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Jo D, Jan 19, 2021.

  1. Morning all. Woke up on this blustery morning and got lost dreaming about being back in my campervan - only purchased last summer, currently being stored to avoid salt and rain, but I'm beginning to plan this year's adventures, first of which was to book a pitch at Ocean Pitch, Croyde - a really great place if you haven't been there.

Am new to Late Bay, so hope I'm putting this request in the right place.

Contrary to most people I actually want my dormobile to have its original interior (which is doesn't have currently). I'll do overnights in it, but not major camping, so I'm in search of an interior that I could fit this spring.

If you know of anyone taking theirs out and it's in good condition, please let me know.

  2. might be worth talking to some of the interior fit-out companies see if they have recently removed any usable units? i'd also check out to see if there is an owners group on facebook, maybe ask there too?

    good luck with your search.

btw- croyde fan here too, although we usually stay putsborough / braunton / saunton :)

  3. The good condition is the hard bit, they’re all 40+ years old damp plywood or chipboard!
Might be better replicating what you want with new materials.

Welcome along. Always love Croyde, best place in the world!

  5. I would agree with the above. Having looked around a good few shows, very few of the original interiors made from chipboard have survived the damp British climate. I would get pictures of an original and get someone to make a replica, if you want an authentic solution.

Having said that, you might be better asking for opinions on what other folk on here think is useful and what isn't, for how you plan on using your camper.

In my opinion, if I had a clean sheet, storage space, a full width bed, a heater, a table and a fridge would be job done.

I appreciate you need a sink to get your vehicle registered as a camper, but if it already is classified as a camper, then I wouldn't bother with one.

It will not be impossible to find that interior, as people "upgrade". Keep looking in the "for sale" on here, also check thesamba.com as there are quite a few UK people on there.

I was always going to swap out my 1974 Devon Eurovette interior that was in my bus from original when I bought it in 2010, but as I used my bus, it grew on me. Using runny epoxy resin soaking into chipboard that had started to break down, I was able to hold it together .

If I was going to change it, I would go for a wider bed, keep the excellent swing out cooker that is removable for free-standing use outside an awning, and move the sink to the other side of the walk through.

One thing about the older interiors is that generally they were designed for mass production so they tend to be made out of flat panels of ply or MDF (or originally Weetabix if Devon), so they are easier to replicate at home.

  7. I have a Dormobile fortunately my interior is all complete and original but if I had the choice again I would not fit a Dormobile interior as the bed sits too high. But if you really want a Dormobile interior I would start with Dormobile themselves you can find them online I will send over their details

  8. Thanks that's a really good idea I'll do that. Frustratingly there was a good one for sale on Facebook just before lockdown and then the person totally disappeared! Sorry for slow response, I didn't realise people had responded to my request.

  9. Thanks for this, I did look at Dormobile having recently got some new bunk canvases from them but I don't think they do interiors, but I will go back and double-check.

  10. Thanks this is good advice, at the moment I actually want a sink in the van as it will be mainly for day trips with bikes, or weekends with friends - my 6'2" other half finds the whole thing a bit claustrophobic - if that's how you spell it :) I might have a hunt around on the internet to see if there are any interior plans for a dormobile, that way I could maybe create a hybrid design with a bed that isn't quite so high . . . .

  11. Keep looking. My guess is something will come up. I managed to get a reasonable Devon interior on here. I have repaired and replaced quite a bit, rubbed down and re-varnished, and am getting towards quite a nice interior.

Even if you find a tatty one, you can buy melamine, contacts adhesive and decent plywood, laminate up your own panels and then attach the original fittings. I replaced all the worktops/lids in my Devon interior in this way with new blue melamine:

  12. Thank you, that's good to know and I'm up for some restoration so I will keep my eyes open. I like your blue worktops.

  13. You could always relegate him to the awning, if he moans too much ;)

  14. I’ve currently got two of the ‘kitchen’ bit, the cupboards with the sink in etc. Obviously I’ll only be needing one but haven’t decided whether to keep my original or fit the earlier interior that was bought for another idea that didn’t happen.
Whereabouts are you and how much of a hurry are you in?
    I’m near Durham.

My 2p worth ... You're more likely to find bits of an interior than the whole thing.
@nobbly not too long ago advertised a shell with about 3/4 of an interior in evidence.
    Might consider splitting??

  16. On the bright side...you have got a Dormy roof - the best roof of all IMHO!

  17. I’ve got a jk 3/4 rock n roll bed in mine so don’t have the height issue. It fits together quite well.
I can try and get a few pics of the two units if you’re interested?

  18. Hello, as always sorry for the late response to this thread! I live in Dorset, so a bit of a trek but if lockdown opens back up the other half might be able to stop in on his work travels. Having the sink bit would be a big part of the puzzle for me, so I would be interested and won't be looking at doing any major refit til April at earliest. Thanks for getting back to me.

  19. A few pics would be super useful as that might mean I could keep the current rock and roll bed, though that's another thread to start as it sits at a crazy 90 degree angle so is really uncomfortable . . . .

Please do share pics if that's easy to do.
