  1. So basically i booked a trip away in 3 weeks to the isle of skye amd the highlands, a little respite from working at the hospital for months on end.

I have a few issues I've got and would love advice, i thought I'd ask to clarify my thoughts etc.

    Issue 1
Got a crazy juddering on the gearbox which has happened since changing the engine mounts and clutch cable.

I'm gonna take the engine out tomorrow.
    Redo the gearbox mounts.

I have like a bullnose ring thing on the nose cone, are there any at the back of the gearbox and where do you buy them from.

I have bought a new clutch cable conduit and some shims, hoping this will fix the gearbox judders.

    Issue 2

I have the standard air filter, it keeps filling of oil through the breather, is this normal? Or is it a sign of issues/wrong set up of plumbing.

    Issue 3

I need to change the oil filler, it has holes in it, and they leak, do i need a specific tool to remove this/does anyone have one i can borrow and post back. Also, does anyone know where i can find said filler.

    Issue 4
Where can i buy the cunifer pipe for the fuel line. I've sources bio hose but no cunifer.

    Many thanks

    Sam.

  2. 1. Is the main steel conduit for the clutch cable firmly attached to the torsion bar tube at the back? If this flaps around, can cause terrible clutch judder. Do you have the loop in the flexi conduit up to the gearbox?

1a. What do you mean by "bullnose thing"?

    2. Are you sure you've got a stock air filter? Oil bath or paper filter? Have you got the little twirly oil separator that goes in the breather line?

    3. Yes, you do need a tool. The expanding grippy ones work best. New oil fillers available from the usual suspects (or used to be).

    4. Cunifer should be available from anyone supplying brake lines and fittings. You might have to buy quite a length of it, tho' (like 25ft). EMPI do a good replacement steel fuel line of the right length.

  4. I had the same bad judder on my beetle I put some shims on the end of the conduit up to gearbox to make a bend in it as it was dead straight and that solved the problem

  6. To be honest, i think i have bigger issues, the pressure k have coming out of the oil filler is quite something, id say worn rings etc, i think thats why the oils getting into the filter so much

Thats the advantage of the oil bath type filter. Oil blowing out the breather acts as a free top-up....

Do a compression test it will show if there is a leak..ì

  9. Take off the oil filler cap and put your hand near the filler hole with the engine running. A slight fluttering is fine, a good chuffing could mean blow-by.

Compression differences show that you might be starting to have a bit of a leak. As they are all still quite high though its not going to stop you.

At this point its probably cheapest to clean out the filter periodically but start planning an engine refresh over the next couple of years.

You could fit a breather box full of coarse foam.. like the stuff in the oil bath air cleaner - set up with the pipe from the engine going up into the bottom, so the oil drains back down into the engine, and has a gas takeoff at the top feeding the filter.
22mm plumbing fittings on a baked bean tin with a lid soldered on the top should keep it going...
