Helicoil in Cylinder Head

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by mattw, Jul 28, 2020.

  1. Just in the process of fixing my stripped exhaust stud holes with helicoil type inserts. Just wanted to check that if I break the tang and lose it down the hole, presumably it won’t end up getting inside the engine?!

It could drop down and through the valve while starting the engine, if you manage to fire it back in the exhaust port.
The other end of the stud is still outside the head between the back of the flange and the head if I remember rightly so the tang should stay outside.

Just put rags in the port to make sure.

  3. When I shine a torch, I can definitely see light behind the lower stud hole so that one should be fine, just not sure about the top one and can’t get to the back of the port!

You could leave the tangs? But neither breaks into the exhaust port, that would be crazy.

  5. ^this. It'll either end up at the bottom of a blind hole where you can blow it out, or fall out the other side of the casting
