Heater control levers

  1. Hi Folks,

    Once again I'm in need of some help, when I bought our van the previous owner hadn't refitted the heater control levers after having the dash out. She's currently set on full heat so at least I know the heater channels are working well. Unfortunately the window winders aren't and it can get a little to hot on long runs so need to be able to turn the heat down until I sort the window winders at least lol.

    The levers are sitting in the glove box, they look simple enough to fit but have different coloured ends so what I am after finding out is what one goes where, and what does each one control???

    are the cables connected to the pods under the van? pop under and see, the pods may be cable tied open so it's on heat all the time..... 3 levers blue one opens and closes front vent, (cold air) 2 red for heat to screen or floor (if fitted) and one red turns fan on (if type 4 engine) depending on the position of the lever. that's it in a nutshell but i'm sure someone will add to it.

    so as yours is 1600 you won't have a fan, i can't recall which lever moves which cable without crawling under the van but basically the red ones push open and pull closed a flap on the heater pods to shut off the flow of hot air

  8. hi mate, if yours is a right hand drive then the levers should be in this position, blue on the left and the two red ones on the right.

    when they are all up that means they are all in the off position. Pull the blue one down and that opens the front air flaps under the front grille, allowing for fresh air to come into the cab area and out of the two side air vents on your dash if its all connected up.

  11. Have a look under the dash and se if there are cables attached. Next work out which lever does the heat distribution and which control the amount of heat. You can do this by moving them in turn and you will hear the flap in the heat riser, this one is the distribution. The other one is the heat on/off/amount adjuster. Next go under the bus at the rear and you will see the heat exchangers atached to the exhaust, on them are some levers which the cables should be connected to. any adjustment on the cable is done here with a screw that clamps on the cable. Get someone to move the lever in the cab and see if the levers on the heat exchangers moves, these are sprung loaded to close (no heat), so if the lever is up in the cab meaning they are closed/off you can reach up and move the arms to check if theyre seized or not.
    Shorter answer: as your heating is on all the time it means either the cables going to the cab are pulling them - lever in wrong position, cable seized or badly adjusted OR they have been 'wired' open using cable ties or wires.

Thanks for all the advice and pointers everyone, not had a chance to get out and have a look today, those occasional showers that were forcast turned out to be torrential downpours and thunder storms. Hopefully weather will give me a break tomorrow and I'll be able to look then and sort her out.

  13. Not got round to fixing the wires on ours yet but we have had the pods cable tied in the 'Hot' position all summer with the cool air adjusted using the blue one and windows open, need to fix the wires this winter.

    From experience, when you change the heater cables (from front to heat exchanger) try and blow some penetrating oil down the steel tubes as the outer cable may have rusted in (our 73 had) and stuggled to remove the old cable. In the end we ended up cutting the steel tube and sleeving it when it was freed off.

    When you put the new cables in, give them a light smear of grease to assist in feeding through
