Heater cables.

  1. Hello.

I've stupidly gone and disconnected all my heater cables from the levers on the dash without taking note of exactly where each one went.
I know which cable goes to which lever, however there are two holes on each lever (one right at the end and one a bit further up) and it's which hole to use on each lever that I don't know.

If anyone could confirm for me which hole I should be using for each of the levers (lever that controls the amount of heat, and lever that controls where the hot air goes) that would be much appeciated.

    Thanks.

    Nick.

I've just done 2 vans but they only had one hole, yours must be later. I'd guess if you lay the outer in the bracket it gets clipped to, hopefully it would be obvious which hole to use?

  3. Thanks.

I'd hoped it would be obvious too, but it didn't seem to be.

Another question on it too. The cables with hooks that go through the levels, do they go from the middle of the two levers to the outside, or the outside to the middle, or a combination?

    Thanks.

In such a way that they don't clash. Some like my early have a lever for each heat exchangers, one for the cold and an actual lever on the totum pole diverter, a bit later the two I just did (73-4) have both exchangers on one lever and one lever for the totum pole flap and one for the cold. Then yours sounds like seperate levers again - do you have 3 red levers and one blue? It's beginning to make sense

And the design of the levers changed too.

There are 2 pairs of levers? I think for each pair thread from inside, clip on the outside.

  5. I have three - two red and one blue.

The blue one is connected to the cold air control flap via a metal rod - i never disonnected that one.

It's the two red ones that I'm trying to get connected up again.

One has two cables going to the two heat exchanger control flaps. The other also has two cables - one to the totem pole diverter, and one to under the van to control heat going in to rear of van.

I disconnect all the cables on the red levers in order to replace the cables.

One of each pair of cables has a hook end, and the other an eye end. The hooks go through one of the two holes on the levers, either from the outside in to the middle between the two red levers, or from the middle between the levers to the outside, the other cables with the eye ends then go over the hooks and finally circlips hold them all in.

So what i'm trying to determine is which hole i need to go through for each of the hook ones, and from which direction.

As I understand it these two levers interact with each other in some way (at least this says they do: http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/freemefromthishell/vw/T2 Heating.htm) and so I think I need to get the right holes/direction etc for them to work properly.

Hope that explains my set up a bit more and what i'm asking.

My van is a 1976 Westfalia US import.

    Thanks.

    Nick.
