Heat exchangers

  1. You know heat exchangers have that gauze (asbestos) type material inside them that sit between the fins and the steel outers. well what do the new repro ones have in the place of the asbestos?? is the asbestos needed?? what's stopping me cutting the old material off and just enclosing them in the casings again??

  2. probably the fact that asbestos is lethal and needs to be disposed of by a professional. is it actually asbestos?

  3. Nothing but I suggest if you are going to do this then prior to removing the covers you thoroughly wet the inside, wear a face mask and paper overalls and do this on some plastic sheeting or similar, disturb the material as little as possible removing the covers. Put the mesh into a sturdy plastic bag, remove any debris keeping it wet and clean up with cloths including cleaning any tools, put these into the bag as well - put the plastic you were working on into the bag and seal it. Put into a second bag, seal that and dispose of somehwere that takes asbestos waste. Fotunately I have facilities at work.

  4. hmmm, I was thinking of obliterating it with a flap wheel. I was going to do this at the back of my garden as it's out of sight and only overlooked by the kids playground... when i was finished I was going to sweep the dust onto the public footpath at the side of my house. all evidence would be removed as it's like a wind tunnel so it'd get blown away in no time. :)

    Obviously joking!!! :p
Brucieboy, yes it's apparently asbestos but the white variety rather than the nasty blue stuff, either way I dont want it.
Of course I'm going to get rid of it responsibly, I was refering to it's function and what it's actually there for. I can only assume it's there to add layer of cushioning and a bit of insulation. There was a guy on the samba.com who used glass fiber cloth but not sure how nice this would be once it starts to break down.
I dont want to turn my heat exhangers into rattle boxes either though

Until some one gets it tested no one knows even VW have said it wasn't but then they also said it might.

The fact it was built in the late 70s when asbestos risks were well known i would be surprised but its only £30 to get it tested
so some one please test it
Maybe we could pave the way i would put in a couple of quid in to get it tested and i have a type 1

  7. Are you sure that woven material isn't glass fibre, as insulation? Looks like it to me.
