Heat exchangers for a 1600

  1. Thinking about buying replacement Hxs and on looking up prices I find they go from £69 to £114, variously described as being of top quality to best available (but not OE). Is the cheapest crap and the most expensive best or reasonable and overpriced. I am in need of a little guidance as to actual quality :)

The more expensive ones are slightly better made and I think heavier, but still rubbish inside compared to the originals. I find checking the shipping weight is sometimes a good guide if it's given. Having checked VWH list them both as the same weight - I don't think that's correct.

  3. I've had the Dansk repros (not very heavy) and they weren't that good. A waft-ish of warm air. They just had stumpy little fins.

Swapped them for an original used pair off flea bay (I was lucky), and difference is amazing. If you want heat, I'd seriously suggest getting a used bug/bus set, rather than new repros. Might need some fixing up, but worth it!

  4. Thanks. I was a little surprised at the price range covering what was afterall a repro unit. It did seem to suggest that there could possibly be a real difference in quality other than the usual verbiage.

Perhaps they have another couple of stumpy fins. lol

The fins are much finer in the originals both T1 and T4.
I don't know about the T1 exchangers but the original T4 ones were lined inside with foil coated insulation as well.

  6. Never seen the foil, but the fins on my T1 originals are just like those. The thing's stuffed full of them.
