Heat Exchanger and Conns to snail

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Roxy46, Aug 29, 2012.

  1. I've been working on my heating system (t4, leftie 1970cc) recently trying to get it into shape for the Winter. I replaced the thermostat a while ago, then installed new heater cables and made sure the flaps foreward of the heat exchangers worked OK. Next job was to find out why there's no tube connecting the snail to the left hand H/E and why I'm getting nasty smells thro to the cab!!

Had a look this afternoon, between showers, and found there's no cut-out in the left hand side tinwear to allow for the tube to be fitted and that underneath, on the top of the heat exchanger where the tube should fit (?) is just open to the air. I guess this is why the hot air in the cab is smelly??

Can someone please point me in the right direction as to what I need to sort out my tinwear. Probably a silly question but is tinware for a late bay t4 engine different to that for a t2 tp engine or are parts inter-changeable? Who sells t4 tinware, and, on the underside what connects the tinware to the left hand H/E?

Many thanks in anticipation of a wealth of knowledge winging it's way to me shortly!!

  2. post up a pic of your set up , yes tinware is different on flat 4s but i don't know much about them tbh :)

  3. L/H should connect like this...

Its not connected to the tinware but, to a metal pipe from the heat ex' that sticks up through the tinware.

Monkey Harris had a lot of tinware for the type 4 motor for sale a while back, maybe worth pming him?

  5. Thanks folks - that's given me something to think about! Dicky says it's part 29 on the link he provides - how does it attach to the heat exchanger? Can't imagine it's just a push fit cos wouldn't engine smells infiltrate any gap, but it's difficult to tell from the diag. Do I also need clips of some sort? I'll try to post some piccies later of what I have.

  6. sent you a pm

If you drop it round to mine i`ll take it to work and cut the hole for you ?
you can also see how it fits in the flesh on mine at the same time

  7. Thats a good offer. Incidentally it actually bolts on! ie its a loose pushfit but held in place with a bolt into a threaded hole in the exchanger (nut welded on the inside).

  8. I knew you guys wouldn't disappoint me! Thanks very much for the responses - I now have two possible sources of the necessary bits and am making progress!!

    Thanks again

  9. Hey Roxy

If you can't get it sorted try Julian at parts emporium, was struggling to get tin ware the other day called Julian sorted the part and delivery, can't recommend enough and less than 30 quid all in!

  10. dug it out and i think its the wrong side your after

was thinking if you don`t have the hole in the tinware are your US heat exchangers going to fit it anyway ?

    steve

ps the front bit of tinware has a cut out to miss the hole as well

  11. thats nice and clean! is that a new grommet for the duct through the tin. If so where did you get it?

  12. Steve, That doesn't look like the right part - the left hand side one has a tight, flat, 's' bend, I think. Pretty sure my heat exchanger is a standard one but I'd like to have a look on another bus to make sure! Have pm'd you.

If you are stuck I have a spare left hand side one with a tight, flat, 's' bend (so it fits under the oil cooler), glass bead blasted and painted.
