Hazards Work - Lefthand Side Indicators Don't...

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by AndyBcountry, May 31, 2020.

  1. Hi

Totally new here and first timer.... please be gentle. I have a 1971 cross over the hazards work i.e. all indicators, the right hand side indicators work.... BUT ... for some reason the left hand side indicators - from and rear don't.

Is it a faulty 'old' relay or the indicator on the stalk... ????

Any help on this fine afternoon appreciated.

  2. When you say "Don't work" , do they illuminate and not flash or just don't come on ??

  3. Sorry... good question. There is no sound from the relay at all and consequently nothing from the indicators

  4. If they were coming on and not flashing it would probably be an easy fix - relay.

As there`s no power an educated guess would be the switch :(

BUT ..... give the relay a wiggle and a try a few sharp taps with a spanner as it might have stuck in the `off ` position ...
It`s worth dropping off the fuseboard to get better relay access but disconect the battery first !!
If it`s an `old`metal cased one - i`ve stripped mine down before now and found it full of water from a leaky windscreen .
Dried out and gave it a blast of WD40 - it`s been fine since ...

OH - and i sorted the leak .

  5. Hi Lasty

ok will do - is the relay above the fuse board? I’ve looked but am struggling to find it. The board is dry - covered by polythene .....

    thanks for the advice

  6. The relay’s plugged in underneath the fusebox. Feel for the one that clicks with the hazards on.

Guys, if the relay works it works?
    Wiring or switch.

  8. The wiring plug for the indicator switch comes loose on mine and causes the same problem, hazards work OK but the indicators don't flash, I would check that that is fully connected, easy to check just push it further in, its inside the column.

The hazard flasher switch or its wiring from the indicator stalk switch.
Or the indicator switch has just disintegrated.

Not the relay because it flashes when indicating right or hazards are on.
Not bulbs or earths because all 4 bulbs flash with hazards.
The hazard flasher switch has a lot of contacts, one may be dirty , or one wire has fallen off in the circuit that normally directs the missing direction from the stalk.

Well I got to the bottom of it. Stalk ok - relay ok - I found this wire had become unattached behind the dash coming directly from the steering column. Wasn't sure so just connected and hey presto indicators....
    Thanks for the help
