Have I sacrificed performance for unintended induction roar?

I don't really like going over 4,000rpm so I had my low revver built specially - lots of low down torque so I have more HP at 1,800rpm than a 1600 at full chat, but still double the HP at twice the revs. Very pleasant to drive without having to thrash it at all.

Not much point accelerating to a speed that's too fast to cruise at. :)
Yours is different to the ones I'm saying are fine at 55-60mph in 3rd, it's a weedy type-1, all done by 50mph and that's thrashing it. Type-4's are good for another 800 rpm.

I agree, but sometimes I look down at the speedo and have to lift off. Got there by accident. Also, when I see a hill I can accelerate a little to keep it in the ‘power’ range to enable the climb without the weedy 1600 slowing to 45 which it does if I haven’t been paying attention (again)

Went for a drive today and tested the range of 3rd in my 2ltr type 4.

Today I stayed in 3rd to about 58mph.... There is more power there to a point, but not enough, IMHO, to warrant having to rev that hard when 4th is managing.

    Hills are obviously another story

It's a joining the motorway/overtaking thang. It should be noticeably better but I guess slow or a bit faster is neither here nor there. :)

However - having driven a lot of 2l bays over the years, they CAN go like the clappers, they really can... if they are not jetted over-rich.

This is what is great about this forum, little things like this get passed on. So I've learnt some of the boundaries of the engine/gearing, which means I can look after the camper more sympathetically :)or choose to thrash it when needed

Hopefully, @Spacecowboyuk this didn't hijack your thread too much, but definitely take off the pankcake filters, they just restrict airflow.

  8. No worries at all @Chrisd. I'm going to experiment with different jets now that everything else is spot on and see what effect that has:thumbsup:

My 1700 lowered twin slider was good for 70 mph all day long.
Did 90 in it over Bodmin once, just to see.

  10. Lowered, so smaller tyres on the front maybe? Possibly you weren’t going quite as fast as the speedo said you were..?

    This discussion is about acceleration.

  12. It'd depress me if I overloaded my 1600 on the chart.

  13. you will need a AFR gauge and a Lamda setup to make sure you in the correct ball park and not lean

    Yeah.
    It did that well, too.
    Forgot to say.
It had different filters on it.

No. Standard size tyres with hardly any room. The lowering technique was ‘cut and twist’. Terrible way, I know, but I bought it like it. Hung itself on the ball joints, but boy, handles roundabouts like a car.
