Handbrake warning light wiring (1700 type 4)

  1. Hi guys
I have fitted a handbrake warning light switch from a late 2 litre to my 72 (73) 1700 bus, its originally a type 4 engine fitted bus. I could fit an aftermarket light in the dash for this but looking at the wiring for the later model this is used to illuminate the dual circuit brake warning light (this is also standard fitment on my bus). On the later bus this connects to terminal 61 on the warning light. Seems to work on mine but havent had the opprotunity to run the engine with that connection made.

Anyone done this who could advise please!

  2. If you've got the "B" light on the dash, and the little module that goes with it, hooking up the h/b switch as in the wiring diagram should be fine.

Makes no difference if the engine is running or not.

  3. Will give it a try tomos then. the issue with checking with engine running is that light comes on when ignition on and goes out when engine running (if brake light switches are operating properly).

Is this the 4 terminal one? Anyone got a spare?

Is this combined low fluid/handbrake on thingy? I'm putting together a late Aussie bus and this is missing, but the wiring is there and labelled up - the owner must have lost it. :( I know - I should look at the wiring diagram...

Bad luck on the wire melting or whatever you've done Chris. :(

  8. *******er - looks like ive done the alternator - cock! Nice easy job eh!

  10. Connected the handbrake switch to terminal 61 on the dual circuit brake warning unit. Fine when not running but got hot - quick. No fuse between voltage regulator and blue wire up from there. No increase in volts across terminals when running so has to be one or tother. Tried a 2nd hand regulator I had kicking about to no avail. If I had a known - good one I could rule out alternator but dont.

Will have to get hold of both and fit reg first to see if problem persists. Think blue should be at 12 volts when running so will check it at rear also to rule out wiring issue.

  11. Uh. Been trying to find the wiring diag that includes the h/b switch. Terminal 61 does appear to be the feed from the alt warning light output. If you've shorted this straight to ground with h/b switch, may well be one of the smaller diodes in the alt has popped. These are in the diode pack, not the regulator :(

  12. Guessing so - had my head in Bentley and Haynes for a while. Either way it needs to come out - ho hum. Will do my oil cooler seals at the same time and fit my new exhaust - every cloud eh!!!

Is it worth getting it repaired do you reckon (assuming I can find somewhere local that does this) or go straight for a replacement. A cheap one is around 125 and I see hermitage do a 70 amp one (not sure thats necessary).

  13. Re the alt (if it is duff) - might be worth finding your local Bosch dealer to see if they do replacement packs. It's only a small circuit board inside. The rest of the alt's fine. Might even be worth soldering a single diode in, if they're separate. I'd try the Bosch folk first.

I'm still rooting away to see where this h/b switch attaches. Diag from Speedy Jim (VZi) implies the switch is paralleled up on terminal 61, which would work, but I can't see how this would function without pulling a lot of current through one of the three small diodes that feed the alt light output.

Don't get glum - these things are sent to try us... ;)

  14. Think I will fit a stand alone indicator light tbh! Have had a dig and found a spare in my garage but dont know if its a good one. Guess I will find a local auto leccy. used to have a guy I used for starters in Bolton but not needed owt whilst ive been in Notts.
