Grasping the Nettle

  1. So it been a while & i`ve spent the best part of 18 months threatening to sell the crewcab that just sits on the drive & looks like £ signs all winter.I probably only used it a dozen times last summer & found all the little quirks that used to give me that bay driver silly grin(you know the one)were now just becoming anoying.the sticky steering wheel & black hands,40 year old smells,no power,no heat,no ride quailty (my own fault i know).
I pondered various upgrade options for the engine bay that wouldn`t effect the value.1776 or tuned type 4 2 litre.Maybe useability is more important than value so a subaru or a tdi in the back & mount a rad in the void under the load bed & plumb in a heating system.
I basically went round in circles & came back to selling it.
The clocks change soon & the snowboard is back up in the loft & i got to thinking about buying a hilux or another T4 or something equally as sensible/boring.
    So i purchased this
    [IMG]
    low mileage 218 bhp wrx
for the engine,g`box & rear diff
    to put in this
    [IMG]
    sensible option.
Engine & box should sit about where it says slick racks with a short prop & rear diff mounted where the vw g`box is now.i see no point in bolting 200+ bhp to a camper box so i`m going to mid engine it & rinse impreza`s etc off the lights & terrorise the boyracers.
It`s time to grasp the nettle & actually do what i want to do to it without worrying about the value or originality.i`ve had it years & it owes me nothing so i may as well give it some new grin factor.Should take me about a year(so probably 3)to do it properly.Once it`s running i`ll worry about stopping it.

  2. Awesome i cant wait to see the build thread

  3. Ayup mate, welcome back!

Thats gonna be a hell of a project, and as you say its what you wanna do so I look forward to the updates on you throwing it all together, and then of course the video of it going down the strip! :D

  4. Sounds good to me and welcome back. Sod the purists eh.

  5. Reading that just makes me grin from ear to ear :)

I can't wait to follow your progress!

  6. Once it`s running i`ll worry about stopping it.

my thinking exactly...Had a mate in Cornwall who put a transit engine in a T25 anything is possible if you set you mind to it...

    bon courage..

  7. It sounds mental. And that's exactly why you should do it. I will be looking for your build thread in the Resto section. :)

  8. you go for it.....just don't loose the 40 year old smell... that's priceless....

  9. OMG!
    You are my hero!
1st dibs if you ever sell it!

  10. Do you have major plans to deal with the sticky steering wheel,
to me that would be the first and most important job.

  11. Excellent :). You'll be putting the engine at the right end!

  12. Sticky steering wheel ? Reckon that will be a bit stickier once you have finished ;-)

  13. Great idea. Crew cabs are a bit out of the ordinary. Mounting a mid engine scooby in there makes it unique. So the engine bay will be empty then ? Make it into a bay with a boot!

  14. yep it`s going to have a rear locker.i`ve sorted the sticky steering wheel with a tidy wrap of insulation tape(works suprisingly well).thanks for the welcome back fellas:thumbsup:
