GPZ1000 wont start

  1. @top banana racing and others bike fettlers...

Kwak GPZ 1000 RX wont start. Symptoms are.. was running then laid up. Ran fine for a while then wouldn't start. turns over great, spark at all plugs runs for a few rotations backfires like a gun going off. Currently got tank off as.......I got so peed off with it its been sat in the back of the garage for years..... so.. tank is off and Im feeding it WD straight into the carbs just to see if it fires.

Appreciate its back to basics and im amazed it just turned over by putting a battery on it tbh. so.... it will turn over on the button (im not labouring the starter as don't want to burn it out) Looking to go simple initially with plugs, caps and leads but im thinking ignition rather than carbs (although they will need cleaning anyway)

I'm doing this to decide whether to keep it and fix it, flog it as a runner or just give up and get shut for spares/repair. Id like to get it running though. Will be delving into the Haynes book of lies after work but any pointer gratefully received.

I'd ditch the WD and squirt brand new petrol in the venturi's first before you go too far.. if it fires a bit, clean the carbs out and fill with new petrol. Doubt anything else will have gone wrong from standing.

  3. Prob down to modern fuel, we used to get this every spring in the bike shop where I worked. People generally put the bike in storage without draining the fuel from the tank and carbs. Part evaporates leaving a gummy residue that blocks the fine drillings and jets esp in tickover/idle system. If it was too difficult to separate carbs for ultrasonic cleaning dunking in a bucket of tescos cola would often work. There are of course other things that can cause the probs you have but that's where I would start

  4. Have you checked you have a spark at a plug?

Stale petrol in the carbs ... I remember my Honda CBR being somewhat sensitive to this if left standing for a long period.

  5. Did you drain the carbs down before storage? If not could be gummed up with old fuel 'n' 'ting. I'd take the carb float bowls off and check the cut offs are moving freely, remove jets and blow out.

How longs it been sat? Probably needs carbs cleaning out, try as above squirting petrol into the carbs,

  7. I've heard that these bikes will only run with a fat middle aged man sat on them.

  10. There will be some petrol squirting later on! however, when squiring wd (TT fluid actually) down the carbs have exactly same symptom as if im running petrol through the carbs. btw its one hell of a backfire!

I blame @Robo 's Charlie for all this bike renaissance ....the stary glint in the eye of a young man peering down the road of adventure through a fog filled visor can only inspire others...

  14. Carbs, carbs and carbs! And after that, carb related. Ignitions on these either work or don't, spark=working.
    Keihin CVK's from memory, 36mm or 38mm.
They'll be gummed up to buggery. Floats sticking, idle jets blocked, main jets blocked, gummed up needles, CV diaphragms stuck/holed/etc. Air box, flooded/blocked.
After that, inlet manifolds split, exhaust blocked, sticking valves. Blocked fuel pipes, vacuum tap knackered.
I have resurrected dozens of old Kawasakis, ill say it again, CARBS!.

  15. I have yet to introduce Charlie to the amazing world of cardboard & a peg!

Maybe something for techenders when he goes off on his bike around the site at stupid o'clock in the morning

  16. do you think I should have a look at the carbs then!

  17. Maybe, yes.
Modern fuels left just a few weeks turn into an unbelievable gooey Shiite that eventually crusts up.
I have some photos somewhere of some trials we did on modern fuels vs old fuel pipes. The results were frightening.
Modern E10 can eat it's way though old school rubber in a few days! I have personally thrown a set of racing Mikunis away after having tried everything from Avgas to Acid to shift fuel gum, sonic cleaning, soda blasting, nothing worked, in the end £1000 carbs became a paperweight!

  18. cluckin bell! bit of carb cleaner isn't gonna cut any ice then!

  19. It's worth a try, yours has only been a short while, some ge it worse than others, the Mikunis were full on Magnesium race jobbies.

I used to have a GPZ750 if it was left much more than a month you would have to drain the carb !!! pain in the ass !!
