getting an age related plate... what to i have to do??

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Tiny-Pie, Oct 30, 2012.

  1. My number place is VLE 705X which obviously isn't 1974.... people always assume she's a really late bay but it was from when she was imported in the early 80's....

I'd prefer an original age plate as i never really like the VLE as i always think of vile! and she isn't Vile at all!! :)

If anyone has any experience of getting age related plates or knows what i need to do then that would be fantastic :)

    thanks TP x

  2. I got mine from ebay. I shouldn't have them either, but I carry the original plates in the back hatch so that if I'm ever stopped I can try the line that I'm on the way back from a show and forgot to change plates.

    (cue hoardes of people tutting).

Mine have been on a year and I've never been stopped, and I know people with much older vans that have them too with no trouble.

  3. I am not an expert on this at all but havebseveral mates whohave bought personal plates. I think if you work out the letter you want for 1974 then have a trawl of the number plates for sale websites and pages in the Sunday Times etc you will need to buy one. how much depends on how sought after the letters you are after are obviously. I think there is a fee to the DVLA for swapping (DVLA website will have details) andbinsuspect it is as simple as that.

someone will be along in a minute to correct the above but I think that is it.

in terms of black and white ones, we have been running them our 1977 for two years without trouble. we know the guy at the MOT station and he didn't mind us leaving thein for the test. I do have a proper set if needed but haven't had cause to fit them.

I've bought a couple off the DVLA web site

    http://dvlaregistrations.direct.gov.uk/

You can search on here - you can't put a newer plate on your van - but you could put an older one. I thought that the plate related to the age of the vehicle rather than when it was imported but maybe it didn't when yours was

  5. Basic plates with the correct year letter are pretty cheap from DVLA and the easiest way to cure your identity crisis.

  6. i'm not sure what i should be typing/searching for...anything ending in M?? sorry... :S

tiny, just ring your local dvla they will tell you, you can get the number off the net, it's easy, if you do apply you'll need the date of manu[glow=red,2,300][glow=red,2,300]FACT[/glow][/glow]ure to be proven that's all, my mate has a 67 landy now correctly on an E but as your van his was originally used overseas and 1st reg'd on a W in 1980. you could buy a "private" like advised above but he got issued one for free doing it officially.

  8. thanks Ricky :) I'll try calling this aft x

what needs to be done to prove the date of manufacture??

you got your m plate? decode it and print it out, or chassis number, vw can tell you off that but you'll have to pay.

  10. not sure, will have to try find it... :(

  11. if u get a birth cert from vw showing the year the car was built the dvla will reissue u with an age related number , then the number u where given will go back into the system owen nw
