Love em or hate em , shiny bays are very popular , they look right all polished up because people who owned them originally were the slightly better off and they were looked after ,you know ; the old sunday morning wash n wax , down the pub for a few back for lunch and a cowboy film on BBC1 brigade , they kind of ingrained in me this idea that all vans should be highly polished .

Unfortunately my first bay was never subject to this loving ritual as my van was previously owned by my practical father in law who would rather watch the goggle box than polish his motor , so alas by the time i got it it was already past the point of giving it a tcut and restoring it back to shiny .

That said i've never really been a car polish type van owner myself , i love other peoples shiny vans they look great , cared for and cherished , i see them at shows and on campsites and think blimey that looks good but it never encourages me to get the tcut or turtle wax out , i just like looking at other peoples !.

Just my thoughts on it !.

  2. I'm not sure primer will polish too well. I used to clay bar and full wax and polish my car once a month and that would take all day. God knows how long a bus would take to do it right.

Shiny can be good or bad depending how you look at it, as you know my turd is highly polished, however once polished it shows every scratch, dent and mismatched paint colour on it (and there are lots) that said from 10 feet away it looks good so that's the best i can hope for, as long as the paint is original you can get most colours up to a reasonable standard, don't forget how flat and sandpaper like to the touch mine was a year ago.

Thanks Rick, now I will polish the camper & not need to feel bad about a couple of mismatched colours on it.

  5. Each to their own - shiny, not, rat-look, used-look, primer-look, faded paint-look. We're all different, that's the beauty of our dubs. Personally, I'm not into polishing. That said, I know I'll be spending a lot of time polishing mine. Or paying someone to do it for me. Mind you, when it comes to 'detailing', most 'professional' valeters don't have a clue.

  6. My bus must have been highly polished at some point, but unfortunatley years of polishing it has left the paint too thin to polish now, so I wont bother, Until its got some new paint anyway :)

  7. shiny's good, patina's good, rat's good, you find the vesion that matches your bus and your away :)

aiming to get that weathered look as soon as poss with Wilma, I miss the old paint

  8. I only read the thread title mate, I got it out, gave it a good polish and promptly got barred from the pub.

    cheers
    :)

  11. I'm a clean freak, I hate having dirty cars.
I wash my cars when ever I can/ when they need it.
Then I give it a good wax polish every now and again.

3 weeks ago I washed my van.
    Rinsed
    Washed with two bucket method
    Rinsed again
    Dried
    Iron x all over
Re washed with two bucket method
    Rinsed
    Dried
    Clayed
    Polished
    Waxed

Job done about 4 + hours.

Then same with my car the next day, it lasts for about 3 months just give it a little wash, when they need it.

No point shelling out for a new paint job and not keeping it looking nice.

  12. Polish it and it restores the paint, sun ,rain, grime etc .breaks it down and you loose protection, bit like your shoes sargent major saab, sun and light make it look shiney not the polish. 8) plus like old furniture and polish it actually adds patina believe it or not,tis true. Rat etc look good on the right bus , its individual taste but polish will protect your 5000 /7000 paint job.

  13. just done the second wax coat of the day. That'll hold back the rain for a day or so
