Gearbox shaft play

Good news the engine is out (1.8 Type 4).

Heart stopping moment when I realised the back of the gearbox is bolted to the chassis (I thought it was floating).

No oil leaks from the gearbox but there is up and down play in the gearbox shaft where it passes through the clutch release bearing.

Is this normal or do I need a new bearing?

Some movement in the shaft is normal. It's all held tight when the engine's in.
