Gearbox noise

  1. Gawd, the only thing not replaced on the bus so far is the gearbox. Oh, and the horn. But that seems to be working fine. ;) There's a clicking noice coming from the gearbox in first and second (6-rib two litre box). I know it's from the gearbox because it stops if you knock it into neutral. In those gears it seems a little whiney too, but probably sounds worse than it really is because the rear of the bus remains completely bare right now. 3rd and 4th sound perfect.

So, from the above, can anyone guess how much life the box has got left in it? Bear in mind please that it's running off a 2.5 Subaru engine, just put in. Yeah, I know, should have checked the box first. But that's quite hard when you've got no engine. I'm ready to bite the bullet in August and have the box rebuilt, with a slightly taller 4th gear, but do you reckon she'll be alright to do 2000 or so miles in the meantime?

And one more thing. I've heard that Gene Berg make 5 speed box conversions and that there's another company in the US who makes 5 speeds for Subaru conversions. Does anyone know about these?

  2. check your shifter is set up right. You're going through all the expense of having the engine installed and then removed in a couple of months to redo the box? Why not have the box done now?
    :)

  3. Also may want to check and replace the gearbox oil.

People drive around in their cars without whole gears but it would be hard to give you any sort of prognosis.

I would say however if it is serious and you want to get it rebuilt - rebuild it before something actually makes it stop.
