Gearbox front mount - how easy?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Sean Warwick, Oct 21, 2023.

  1. I was under my 73 Devon today for a number of little jobs that needed doing.

one of the things that still needs doing is the front gearbox rubber mount as I sometimes get bad juddering when slipping the clutch

I had a fairly good eyeball of the offending item and it’s not in good shape.

it looks like it should be a straightforward thing to replace, as long as you have a jack under the gearbox.

is that right or is it actually much more faff than it looks?

  2. Stubby 17mm spanner on the top nut and you should be fine.. I've done mine in situ in a German car park so should be fine

If you are getting juddering its worth checking the clutch cable has the right bend in it on the side of the gearbox and that the metal tube the cables in is still attached to the torsion beam

My front mount bar fell right off and the clutch didn't judder - I'm with Matty, You're looking at the wrong thing.

  6. ^yep, this. I'd bet your solid cable conduit has come adrift.

I will third the suggestion that the front gearbox mount isnt the cause of the clutch judder, and the bowden tube being loose and losing its magic curvature being more likely.

And add to it that a leaking gearbox input shaft oil seal can lead to gearbox oil on the clutch which also causes juddering, or in the extreme a long delay before the clutch actually grips at all.

I had a similar problem and for me, it was the bracket holding the bowden tube to the gearbox (the bolts were loose).
