Gearbox front clamp and yoke

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by 62 deluxe, Nov 5, 2020.

  1. My 72 yoke is too flexible and they don’t make the rubber to fit this one year only clamp. So I bought a later repro clamp and rubber yoke but the fit between them isn’t good. Any ideas how I may get them to fit? Heritage suggested using something to fill the gap, whereas a thread on the samba showed someone filing the clamp down to further squash the rubber. Anyone else come across this or have any ideas?

Looks like your aluminium yoke is has corroded away , new yoke time or fill the gap with polyurethane

  3. Hi David

It’s a brand new repro clamp and yoke rubber. Tried to find a genuine clamp but they seem to be unobtainium☹️

  4. Could you not cut some strips of thin shim (a coke can would likely do - good metal!), and progressively pack the curved inner surface out until it’s a tight fit?

As @davioft says, Tiger Seal, Sikaflex or other PU filler/ glue will work there. Just fill the gap, tidy up, allowing the rubber to sit slightly proud, let it cure then clamp it on.

Letting it cure first means it does not just get squeezed out when you apply pressure.

  6. You could pack it out with strips of rubber inner tube.

  7. Thanks for the advice guys, it’s just a shame that two new parts that are supposed to be tight don’t actually fit each other??? I have found someone selling nos yokes, but as you can imagine, they aren’t cheap!

I would fix the new parts you have, treat them as a home completion kit, with a bit of work required.
Have you tried bolting the new parts onto the gearbox? It could be that the rubber bulges out on the gearbox side when not fitted, and when you tighten it up, it is squeezed into place correctly.
In other words it distorted after being taken out of the mould.

  10. Sadly not, it fits right in with a gap of 1.5mm around it and no bulge. Bolted up rattles about☹️
