Ill be doing the works to mine to make sure everything is in perfect working order Then ill be shelling out for a fancy shifter afterwards One thing i have been contemplating is added a couple of grease nipples to the shift rod tube whilst its all apart or is this overkill Ned id love to have a drive if im at the same show as you as those shifters look pretty well engineered
Yes, I agree with what's been said - all the linkages and all that gubbins should be sorted first. Sorted already. I just tried an after-market shifter the other day and thought 'hmmm, must have one of those'. It really did make that much of a difference. The Gene Berg one goes for about £300 in the UK. But you can buy one direct from the US factory for just under £190. That includes the optional ball, instead of the T-bar. That's it. I'm done. No more fancy bits. I've run out of money. The GB's the last thing.
I agree with Zed. My original shift still works. Like all of them it just needs a bit of gentle finesse changing down to 2nd, but never a problem changing up to 2nd or to any other gear. The shift is rather lengthy, but then it's a van not a racing car - ever driven a 7 tonne truck?. The time it takes to shift gives the synchro time to work and helps keep it smooth. When moving into first with the handbrake on, as on a hill, I just hold the stick a little lower in pen grip. Simples. 300+ Euros for little improvement? I don't think so. There is a piece in Hayburner (P41) advertising/testing a similar Bug Tech shifter.
