Fuel Tank Question

  1. Just a quicky.

Does anyone know what the small pipe is at the top middle of the fuel tank?

I've tried searching but come up with nothing so far. Mine was attached to a pipe that then had a big bolt in the end!

You can see the black pipe in the top of the below pic, and you can just see the bolt at the far right of the picture.

there are two breathers that go up to the rear vents, for expansion in hot weather, can't see pic well on phone but it's maybe them?

  3. on the left side and right side of the top of the tank are two right-angled bits of pipe, these are breather pipes. The breathers are attached to two long pipes that cross each other on top of the tank and continue round and up the air vent tunnels, back down again and into the engine bay, at which point they join to a T piece and are feed into the air filter. These are designed so that you dont have pressure build-up in the tank.

The big black pipe in the top centre of the picture looks like a lash up of something from a PO.

  4. Yeah the breather pipes are there (although they have been hacked off by the PO)

The one I mean is shown on the below pic. You can just see it poking straight up in between the two breather outlets:

  5. yup as mentioned ,
there are two steel pipes that come across the tank from each side,
and join on to the top of the tank, they are breathers/expansion pipes, they go up the vents and back down to the air filter or carb,
change the short rubber joining pipes while your in there to prevent petrol smells.

  6. Pretty sure it's not the breather.

The tank has a total of 5 inlet/outlets:

    1. Larger filler in
    2. Outlet to carb
    3 & 4. Breather outlets
    5.........no idea!

fuel injected tanks also have a return to tank, is it possible in the past someones added a return to yours?

  8. That would make sense as it has been blocked off. Maybe it is a different tank to its original one. The inside certainly looks newer than 40 years old!

  9. the small stubby pipe in the middle is a breather.... ;)

it has a small rubber bend on it ,onto a steel pipe , which then goes over to the steel filler pipe.

  11. Hi, it's a breather which i think went to the metal filler tube on early busses to let you fill up quicker with less gurgling.

I bought a second hand tank for mine from juperwort in Notts (on JK forum) and it had the same so I had it cut off and a plate welded over.

    Cheers
    Ben
