Fuel tank. How big is it?

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Baydreams, Jul 5, 2012.

  1. Is it 60 litres? If so, that'd cost about £79 to fill to the brim. Am I right? Like most, I've got a dodgy fuel gauge. A full tank shows half full on the gauge and I start worrying when it drops and keep filling up. For the first few weeks, I was thinking 'gosh this is a small tank' because everytime I was filling up it was only costing £20 to £30. So, by that account, and now guessing that the tank holds about 60 litres, it must have been well over half full everytime I was filling up. Is that right, or are some tanks smaller than others? I know that some tanks are different shapes than others - mine's a 1978 if that helps.

The most common size is 56 litres as far as I know. Has a flat top.

  3. So, on a full tank, you should be easily able to get around 250 miles, even if you were only averaging 22mpg? I think I'm averaging more than that. I've got a 200 mile trip coming up on Saturday. I guess there's only one way to find out how far she'll go and how well the gauge works when it's getting close to empty - take a filled plastic fuel can. ;)

I fill up about every 200 miles as my guage is gash.
I dont have an economical fire breathing engine though so you'll get loads more I'd think.

I think you need to factor in extra miles due to swerving ;)

  7. i dont know whether mine is smaller or there is something seriosuly wrong but i filled it right up the other week to drive to sheffield which is 130 mile and it was empty by the time i got there... its an auto, but it seems that 40 quid from empty fills it til it clicks off, what could be wrong?? and i dont cane it every where, im very steady when i drive it

    can anyone help?

ahhh but is it empty or is your fuel guage bost? fill it and fill a gallon can, run it and i bet you'll get 200 miles before it splutters. mines an auto too and my gauge works.

oh and it takes about 70 to fill

  10. when it was sayin it was empty, the van was splutterin at like 20 quid, presumably when it got so low, all the crap in the tank got disturbed and possibly blocked the fuel filter for a while, i crawled to a petrol station, put 20 quid in and it went past half way :-S it always runs better and faster, the more fuel that's in it too is that normal?

it's not normal, i guess your tank is full of crap or water? maybe a good idea to drain it and change your filter

  12. I fill up every 250 miles and that is around the £60 mark I could get 300 at a real push but my gauge does not work and have never chanced it and that is a 1600 tp :)

  15. opinions please on the thought that when you fill tank to top ,what is the "loss" re the "more weight" due to having a full tank? loss being, more fuel needed to move heavier vehicle? i" m a £20 a time bloke , but then my other vehicle was nicked when i had taxed it for a year(no refund)and filled the tank to the top !!!Grrrrr, AND i"m a jock !( yeah , i know)

  16. Your £20 theory works ok if you've got a pukka fuel gauge but most bays are dodgy!!
Mine's dodgy in a good way it under reads rather than over reads( when it's on empty I've still got about a quarter tank left). I always fill up to the first click and then usually every 200miles ;)

When the gauge was showing empty, I was able to drain 10 litres from the tank when I fitted a fuel filter.
When it was filled immediately afterwards, I was able to put the 10 and another 50 litres in. So the 64 litre figure makes sense as it probably was not quite empty when the fuel stopped coming out.

Unfortunately due to some decline in the engine over the last 4 months or so our 21mpg (34PICT3 all sorted) bus has now reached 16mpg (untuned DFAV 32/36) according to Excel spreadheet so we get about 160 miles out of a tank.

  19. My experience is that a full tank can get me 250miles before I hit the red and get a bit squeeky about filling back up before spluttering to a halt...

I've never had a bus that didn't read 3/4 when it was full. I know I can wait until it hits rock bottom then fill up within 50 miles.
