Fuel Injector

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Kevinthecamper, Jul 2, 2023.

  1. Hi, engine loses revs whilst idling and quickly cuts out. hissing noise audible, and seem to have narrowed it down to the injector. 1976 Californian import 2.0l manual.

Any advice on what corrodes/goes wrong in this area? can only access one of the screws to remove injector without removing distributor and run out of time today so need to plan out order of looking at things. Looks like there is a gasket in place, do they fail? Are they easy to clean and replace or is a new one better? is it plug and pay for the electrics?

    Thanks

    Nick

Hissing is normally a vacuum leak. The only injector that hisses as it flows 100% for a while is the cold start fifth injector on the intake manifold, all the other four at the cylinder heads pulse..

Listen around with the end of a piece of hose , other end held to your ear.

Plenty of hoses to split ..

  3. Thanks, did some more digging and it is of course the fifth injector, its definitely that at fault engine cleaner spray gives a brief blip of the revs.

Will dig into fixing/cleaning vs repair

If engine spray " fixed" it, there is a hole letting in air, it is almost certainly a split air hose, not anything to do with the injector , as you are doing the same thing the injector does, just with the spray.

The fact it needs even more fuel means there is too much air .. . All the cold start injector can do is add a little more fuel as the engine is started.

I would stop worrying so much initially about electrical / injector faults and try to prove it isnt an air leak first.
