Fuel gauge

  1. Does anyone know if a 1968-72 fuel gauge (balance coil type) will fit in the late bay gauge housing. Is it just a straight swap plug and play thing. As i have an early type tank and sender in my late bay. So my origional gauge (thermal type) wont work.

The metal pressing that it mounts on is different
the rest of the clocks will fit a early pressing its just the fuel gauge

  3. tried it and they do not work correctly

  6. Managed for just over a year guessing the fuel useage. Then on the way to cornwall a few weeks back with the estimated 36 miles still to go, ran dry and to a halt. Thats what the 5 litre cans for though. I remember Richard saying he had been running a bit rich at the MOT. Um 25 to the gallons is not a bad guess for a 2L.
Anyway still not taking the engine out or cutting him up to replace the sender.

  9. Answer to my question is YES it does work. I have successfully fitted an early fuel gauge to my late dash cluster. It required a little drilling to fit. Just make sure you remove the gauge regulater as well before installing the early type.
Also i had to cut a little of the cover slot away either side so that you can read either end of the gauge as full and reserve was hidden. Everything works great, no more carrying an extra gallon in a can. ;)

  10. I ignore the gauge. I just fill up around every 200 miles, knowing that it has a range of up 300 miles.
