Can anyone recommend the best fuel caps locking or non locking for a 73 bay that doesn't create a vacuum and causing fuel starvation cheers Ta .

Have you checked your tank breathers? The caps aren't vented so if you're having issues the cause lies elsewhere.

Are your tank breathers blocked? Or joined together in the engine bay without a T off to an air filter?

No breathers not blocked ,changed them all a while back ...its the cap itself is loose even when locked and have concerns of it leaking when tank is full .

  5. I have the stainless locking cap that all the vw specialists seem to sell. it doesnt seal very well in my experience. full tank i sometimes get a fuel dribble from the cap if i'm turning left enthusiastically

i picked up what was described as a "nos" vw locking fuel cap at a show last year i think - its plastic, locking and had a wider rubber seal but unfortunately i couldn't get it to fit. i think i threw it across the garage after some frustrating faffing around.

As i said to Zed ...its just the cap i have is loose even when locked and wish to have a decent cap but with some form of venting on it, as i have heard with some folk on here have had issues with some caps causing a vacuum and then fuel issues .

  7. My cap the stainless steel one from Just Kampers. Does the job, fits tight. Perhaps little too tight, but thats fine with me.

Not sure vented caps exist, and if it did, it would do nothing; the tanks are already vented via the fuel vents pipes. Therefore, the only way to create a problemtic vacuum is if those pipes are blocked or connected directly back to the tank without being tee'd to the air filter.

    Hope that helps.

  8. I believe Yorkshire VW do flat fuel caps, if that's any help.

  9. Didn’t early bays have a hole in the fuel filler cap?
That may be where the confusion is coming from

The filler cap is just about the only place petrol hasnt leaked from.. JK Stainless cap seems OK over 14 years..
Late Bays breather system doesnt allow splashes out when cornering, as the breathers cross over and it has traps for fuel in the top of the loops in the vents before the breathers meet at the centre of the engine bay.

Earlies have the hose parallel to the filler so a good left hander will have it. It must have been a persistent and serious problem for VW to have built a more complex/expensive symmetrical breather system at the same time as doing cost-down elsewhere.

TLDR. If you have the EB breather system its basic design is poorer than the LB system.

The confusion is usually fitted between the seat and the steering wheel.

Mine had a steel breather pipe that exited under the filler hole behind the filler flap. IIRC
