Front Wheel Carrier

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Aunty Bx, Jul 7, 2012.

  1. I am looking to mount my spare wheel on the front of my lovely 1973 bay (Ruby), I don't want to attach it to the bodywork and I have seen pictures of bullbars with wheel carriers which you connect to the chassis does any one know where I might get a reasonable priced one, as I have only had Ruby a week and this is my first post ever please be patience with me if I put my post in the wrong place.

  2. I can't answer your question but welcome 2 the forum :)

Hi Aunty, welcome to the site. I have a wheel on the front of mine and it's attached to a frame which is bolted to the bumper and has a steadying bolt at the top which passes through the mesh of the vent. The frame is like an upside down V. It doesn't really show behind the spare wheel but it keeps the wheel just proud of the front panel and VW badge.
If you're interested I'll get some photos and dimensions for you.

they usually come off australian busses, search for roo bars or contact g'day kombis or other importers who often remove and sell them, occasionally they come up for sale on here but fetch well over £100 in tired (30 plus year old) condition, you could fit a rear carrier like the devon vans had withoul drilling, there is a good repro made bt bluebird customs for around £90 which requires no drilling.

  6. I don't want to mount the wheel on the back really fancy having a Roo Bar and then I can add some spot lights, must have been lighter back in 1973 when Ruby was born or I could have been spoilt with modern lights on cars, but found driving round in the dark Highlands a bit of a challenge, I am having new modern lights fitted and I have been hunting down my Roo Bar, trouble is when ever I put Roo Bar in to various camper parts sites it says "Roof bars" and I get ratty and scream alot! I am waiting to hear back from a few suppliers and the cost is going to be about £200 + VAT + what it costs to get them up to darkest Scotland.

  7. Hello, and dont fret, Roo bars do turn up, ive been waiting for a good set that will be good and strong, and got lucky after 18 months. They turn upon alot of the VW websites, or put a wanted ad up as alot of folk dont like them.

Heres mine sat in front of my bus, they just need a little fettling and the bumpers powder coated to match, oh and the wheel taking off ::). These ones mount under on the chassis, and onto the bumper mounting bolts too
