Front shift rod bush replacement

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Roxy46, May 16, 2012.

  1. My bush isn't there and there's no sign of it. So, time to get a new one methinks!! Looks like an easy job on a t4 1970cc but is it? Do I have to disconnect the rod somewhere in order to move it backwards thro the hole - I presume this is the right method?

    Any advice please?

The first joint is under your cab, just behind your front beam.........disconnect it there. The front tube slides over the shaft if you take the bolt right out. I took my gear lever out to get mine in. If you do this make sure you mark the position of your selector plate on the cab floor and try to put it back exactly a was.

    Hope this helps a bit.

  3. Hey thanks for that - sounds easy so maybe I'll have a go tomorrow. Is there anything I should be aware that could go wrong??? :-

Yeah............putting your selector plate back wrong and losing 2 out of 5 gears. :)

    That's what I did. :-[

  5. Nothing to worry about then eh!! I've had that apart today for a clean etc and it all went back OK so no probs there.
    Thanks again for your help

  6. Trick is to put your bus into 2nd gear before taking anything to bits. If I recall correctly the gearstick once all is reassembled will be vertical on both axes when in second so thats where you need to put it!!

  7. The very front one after the gearstick cup can be fitted without removing anything

  8. Thanks for all the advice - will have a go later today if time, weather and the missus will allow!! Yes, it is the very front one but I had another look at the bush housing yesterday and I'm not sure I can squeeze the bush into place with the rod in situ - it looks very tight. Maybe cutting it, using some lubricant and sliding it in might work? Will perhaps try this before removing gear stick etc. altho' even this looks fairly straightforward.

Lying on your back trying to do anything under a bus is not the easiest or best way of spending enjoyable time!!!! But I guess we wouldn't have 'em if we wanted to keep all our hair!!

  9. Don't cut it. Just remove the gearstick and front shaft portion as Mr Haynes tells you. Put the van into 2nd gear before you start.

Easy job, although setting the stop plate can be a bit tedious.

  11. Ok and thanks a lot. Haven't had the chance to do today so will try tomorrow.

  12. OK - job done. Took about an hour this morning cos I was under the bus on my back. Would have been half that time if it was up in the air. Took out gear stick making sure in second gear first undid bolt, pulled back the front part of the shaft, inserted the bush and then put everything back. No probs with gear selection afterwards but in all honesty not sure putting the bush in has made a lot of difference to anything!! Anyhow I know it's been done and I know how to do it next time if need be. So thanks for all the help and advice.

Paradox - I don't think there's any chance of getting the bush in without moving the shaft backwards, which also means taking the gearstick out - well it did in my case. But thanks for the thought.
