Four Winds C&CC, Castle Hedingham, Essex

  1. Camping & Caravan Club Certified site right next to steam railway and about 0.5 miles from the castle so ideal for those with kiddies. Not a massive site - about twenty vans, tents, caravans on site in a rough cut meadow on a slight slope. Can be a bit breezy but totally secluded. Toilets and shower spotless, £10 for the night. 20 minute walk into the village and plenty of secluded walks to explore, did about 7 miles over the day.

Not much in Castle Hedingham itself. The Bell Inn is great - casks of Adnams and other local brews poured direct and not from a tap and the Wheatsheaf which wasn't as atmospheric. Only one shop which closed at 1300 and both pubs don't start serving food until 1800/1900. There is a chinese takeaway on the outskirts of the village and another pub called Memories but after tasting all the ales at two pubs I was a bit tiddled to drive and find it - Emergency noodle time last night :)

Would definitely go back for more walks and to revisit the Bell but would ensure that the BBQ was in the van this time.
