Foam backing

  1. Hi all,

I'm going to give my door cards a refresh and put some new vinyl on.

What type of backing have others used? I was thinking of a 5mm foam so that I can stitch a bit of detailing in and give it a little extra comfort etc.

If it is good to use, getting a bit more foam technical, is a closed cell one, ie water proof and a good insulator, the best or is it too hard to stitch through?

Is that the best to use, or would something like a fleece lining work better?

    Thanks in advance.

  2. I'd go for something like the stuff they sell on rolls to go under wooden flooring. Nice & thin. Worth having the foam, as covering straight onto the panels looks odd.

Try to get foam with a cloth backing, otherwise when sewing through the stitching will pull straight through, think its called "screen foam".

  4. Cheers guys. I was wondering whether the closed cell foam would mean I didn't need to back it.

By its nature it is hard and strong, (it's that black stuff used to transport computer chips etc), so thought it might hold a stitch.

Might get a small sample from somewhere and just give it a try.

  5. Great, I'll get a couple of samples and have a sew...

    3mm or 6mm?
