Flywheel/clutch help

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Hardrinseron, Sep 23, 2023.

  1. Hi,
I just bought a new AS 1600 engine for my 78 bay. The flywheel that come with it is a 220 but my clutch is only a 200 so it won’t fit. Should I swap the flywheel for a 200 and use my old clutch or should I buy a new clutch kit for the 220 flywheel. I’m a little worried that a 215 clutch will not fit the 3 rib gearbox. Any help much appreciated!
    Thanks
    Darren

Replacing the flywheel will probably cost a similar amount to replacing the clutch. The bigger flywheel and clutch will make the clutch slightly easier on the leg.

Only 227mm flywheel won't fit your 3 rib box.
Use whatever is in the best condition?
If you change the flywheels check the end float (and check it first too).

  4. Where are you measuring? The important dimension is the diameter of the clutch friction plate, 200 or 215 (for later Bays). Both will fit a 3 rib box. Both are fine, although the 215 gives you bit more grip for the sheer raw power of a 1600 ;)

I had a 215mm clutch on a 1600 and a 3 rib gearbox. No problems.. the fixing bolts are M7 because the edge of the flywheel is thinner between the clutch and the starter ring.
