Flapping Jallouise window

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by z4alfie, Jan 6, 2013.

  1. I saw an associated post and it reminded me that I was going to ask advice on this ages ago and kept forgetting. I have a pair of louvre windows, the Westy Jallouise type that flap about because the mechanism is pretty loose. There's about three full turns on the wheel before it will open the louvres and when theyre closed, they flap about rather than locking shut. It seems like a sealed mechanism with no adjustment. Any advice?

  3. Have they been rebuilt at some point in the past? You need to correctly position the cross shaft on the small gearbox and the short arms on the shaft so it opens and closes correctly.

  5. The gearbox is sealed and drives the cross shaft with a dog that engages in a slot in each end of the cross shaft. The short arms slide into the same slot, so if you assemble things in the wrong orientation, it is possible that the window will not close properly.

The only way to have a good look at the gearbox and the assembly is to take out the window and split it to separate the halves. Then you can see the gearbox properly and play around with the shaft position to see if you can make it work better.

Is the window in the van? If so, it would be best to buy a used one to refurbish and then swap it out with one of yours so you've got plenty of time to have a play with it and refurb that as well. When you swap out the other one, you can always sell your spare, but at least there's no pressure to get the window fixed quickly.
