Fitting a towbar on a car

  1. I got a second hand towbar ages ago for my car and i need to get it fitted now. It didnt come with nuts/bolts etc but i do have fitting instructions. These tell me what sizes of bolts etc i need but i have a few queries about them so hope you can help me.
Firstly, i presume the bolts need to be high tensile jobbies? is there such a thing as high tensile nuts, or is a nut a nut?
Second, for some of the washers, next to the size it says "CL". Is this a particular type of washer?
And last, some of the nuts say "Hewistop" by the size. Would this just be a name for a locking nut?
    Thanks in advance

  2. From all I can see, a Hewistop is some sort of locking nut, yes - all links point to Bosal tow bars. Maybe contact the manufacturer of your towbar for the correct fasteners?

CL = Class (Metric Material/Strength Specification)

  3. yes, locking nuts are so advised , re your bolt size , if unsure either find anything that is correct bore or take towbar along to any, in your area , workshop/engineering shop/established ironmonger and buy the stuff u require, correct washers also good idea , as is (in my opinion /experience , "locktight">>> thou, if used ensure to buy the product that can be "split" "bust" removed as needed,..> buy the" full on "stuff and you will never get it to shift , ever! i (being totally over the top with such (legal) fittings , as i am > buy longer bolts and double lock "em with 2 nuts per bolt hope this helps.

  4. Or take it to a tow bar fitting shop and ask them about it , I go bolts for mine for the camper from a local camping and caravan shop as they sell the bolts needed for the tow bars

  5. Thanks for your replies.
